BigShot in da House. Hong Kong Poker House that is. My first trip to Hong Kong's first/biggest/best poker club and its aces all around.
It seems in a very short space of time Rummy Coakes, Rick and Deadly have become well known faces around the club, with Rick making his name in a string of tourney placings including snagging ten large in Macau.
But this was my first trip to the HKPH and was very much looking forward to it.
There’s always a little bit of anxiety when you walk into a new game, one that you have never played in before. Above all else, you don’t want to get embarrassed early and have the others think you’re a chump.
So it felt good to win a few hands early, making the right moves and more than holding my own. Great for the confidence and comfort factor.
HKPH: The nuts. .. Great setup. Good vibe. Cute dealers. Knowledgeable staff. Tasty food. Friendly enough players and no rake. What more could you ask for? ….well, a little less smoky and a little more room round the 10 player tables… but that's being picky after having having previously playing on Philberto's roof in the soaring heat and humidity (at night even!), Sham's roof in the cold and rain (again at night) and that shitty little shed across from the Deli.
Some good players, no terrible players at my table and no real big winners or losers for the night. Or at least from where I was sitting. Enjoyed a very tasty pizza later on at the table during a six hour session.
Finally ended the night up $100, which is barely even considering my $2k buy-in. Was up to as much as $5k before losing a couple of hands including trip Qs against straight, which I think played poorly but can’t remember the details. There is no Replay button in real life. Game slowed considerably as the night wore on. More or less gave up the last of my gains during my last Orbit, where the table agreed to a round of straddle. Was never down during the night.
But all in all, very very satisfied with my performance and could not be more excited about this new little club and bringing down the House on my next visit. Even the sampan ride home (my first in 8+ years?) was a trip down memory lane. And good to see four Lamma party animals keeping the dream alive down in Aberdeen when we got there at almost 4 am.
Won’t be a regular like Rick and Rummy but am proposing an every other Friday night session and sampan ride home to the other island bound members of the Lamma Poker Exchange. How bout it boys?
Will need to recalibrate to cash games (mainly sng online) and a much much much higher table stake than our friendly Friday Night Poker in order to do well. Looking back, made a couple of decisions to my detriment by miscalculating the latter.
But I’m excited… and hope that the discovery of my BRAND NEW POKER TOY is a harbinger of good things to come in the Year of the Ox!
As for this particular gamble - I left UK to find it fluctuating around the levels I bought in for. My last check was a bit of a surprise to see it had dropped over 60% since I last checked.A few spectacular gains have brought me up again but still got a long way to go to erase the deficit. Ah well - just like any botched easy stock market gamble I'll have to be in it for the long haul.
PS I'm in for a HKPH visit on a week Friday and Sampan home to boot.
So far so good, planning to go this Saturday if we all feel a bit better at home (all been sick) then I'll be grinding it out alongside Don at the 10/20 tables...then next Friday or sooner!
