Again he gives any spade or any Jack or 7 odds to draw out.
Phillberto01: raises $5.10 to $6.60
I perhaps make too small a raise here. $5 call from him to win $20 (plus some additional implied odds). A high spade would call. My mistake was normally you would want to price a flush draw in here knowing you will bust them if the flush draw and full house land except in this case with three spades on the board the full house won’t ever make a flush. Having said that Pocket pair with a spade is going to be playing it more aggressively so a pocket pair is feasible
whatsurbench: calls $5.10

Jacks and Queens now beat me. I presume he would bet though so I bet what I think an amount a worried bigger pair would call.
whatsurbench: calls $13

Phillberto01: shows [9d 9c] (three of a kind, Nines)
whatsurbench: shows [Ac Ad] (a pair of Aces)
Phillberto01 collected $43.50 from pot

He at least wanted to keep the pot manageable with his rockets which is understandable but should have c-bet none the less and slowed down if called.

Deadly takes an unexpected tumble as he faces a down-swing. We await Rummy rising from his slumbers to update us on his week. Moocher busts out properly and arises in the middle of the night to try and resuscitate his lifeless bank-roll to no avail.

Lamma Jim proves he is better on stage than felt as he raises money for the Kids of Nepal and continues to donate online - what a nice lad.

Bigshot Bog takes off to Macau I believe but confesses to having another slide this week as Re-buy tournaments eat into his bank-roll. I believe the prizes get pretty hefty in these tournies so he may yet spring a big win and catapault himself up the table. The flip-side is he may end up with the Wooden spoon for this year's online challenge.

I manage to score my biggest win to date - and without a bonus in sight. Actually there was as I cashed in some FPP points for a fifty quid Amazon book voucher.
I played a marathon 4 table session on Saturday. 7 hours of solid poker. I got my money in good mostly and held up most of the time to take down $260 bucks. I managed a shorter session on Sunday where I managed to add to my tally despite losing a big pot with a combo-draw against two pair and then making a stack-a-donk check raise move which worked with QQ but his 99 had hit a set. I actually had a poor spell on the Saturday where I started to call too much and started to leak a little before kicking my aggression but was happy with my play.

I actually play much better once I have some winnings behind me as I’m less afraid to play my big draws aggressively.

All in all a very good week for me. My desktop wouldn’t start so I cranked up my lucky lap-top which I hold accountable for my good fortune. My desktop now shows a winning rate of 3.5PTBB/100 for 25NL and 0.5PTBB/100 for 50NL. My lucky laptop on the other hand shows a 13PTBB/100 for 25NL and 11PTBB/100 for 50NL showing an average hourly win-rate of US$20 an hour. Too good to maintain in the long run but still a pretty decent sample size, so it counts for something.

I also cashed out another $500 so have now cashed out HK$24,000 for the year with an initial target of HK$50,000 set at the start of the year. Not likely I’ll get there but I could cash out another 10K and still be rolled for 50NL so I would need to win another US$2,000 in the last two months to hit my target.

Likely to be a complete poker free week for me next week with corporate functions every night this week.

A new leader at the top of the online challenge as a +$280 winning weekend propels Deadly into pole position. I follow a similar pattern and recover from a losing Monday with a winning Sunday after managing only two sessions this week. Rummy Coakes has a bit of a slide this week after his phenomenal start but his runners-up slot in the Tournament is another example of his improvement. Moocher does very well well to drag himself out of being Busted by scrabbling his loose cents together and using Free-rolls to get himself back to close to level for the year. We know Chris Jesus Ferguson turned $1 into US$10,000. Can Moocher emulate him?

Lamma Jim finally slips to the bottom of the slope and is due to $20 cash injection from me to try again. Bigshot’s Korean adventure comes to an end with a total of HK$4,200 being donated to the local hoodlums. Cheap holiday entertainment if you ask me for a Bigshot.

Well the Lamma Exchange seems to have survived the global crash okay. Want conservative investment advice. Stick all your savings in Poker Stars I’d say.

Lamma Fun Day Poker Tourney 2008

With a disappointing turn-out the Lamma Fun Day Poker Tournament was straight to a final table of 6.

First blood was to Moocher as he hit trip 4s on the turn and milked a small bet on the turn and river. The first major action was when Mrs Phillberto bet out pre-flop. Bet out on an Axx flop. Bet out close to pot on the turn on board showing two diamonds. The Ace of Diamonds landed on the River and Mrs Phillberto made a 2/3rd pot bet on the river. Moocher fearful of a full-house opted not to risk his tournament life and called the bet taking it down with 86s and Mrs Phillberto lost a big chunk of her chips with AK.

Les heading towards a short stack took down a decent multi-way pot on a Kxx flop that was bet into and had two callers. Bigshot checked, Mrs Phillberto checked and Les fired a near pot sized bet. With the possibility of an all-in from him on the river neither wanted to take a risk with their Kojaks (KJ) and Les took down a nice pot with a K6 bluff/value bet(?).

Les later has his stack whittled down and the two short stacks came up against each other in a battle of the blinds with Mrs Phillberto calling from the Small Blind and then calling a raise. Les shoved on an innocuous looking flop and Mrs Phillberto called off her remaining stack with A high. Les showed J5 for a pair and his hand held up. First out Lamma’s only lady representative.

Les’s fortunes didn’t last for long. Les bet into a Qxx flop with two to a suit. He made a small bet into the turn and river and was called by Moocher who came over the top with an allin on the river. Les called him down but was out-kicked by Moocher’s QJ to take Les out of the tournament and make Moocher Big-stack.

Down to 4 handed and the blinds starting to be meaningful it was folded round to Bigshot who limped from the small blind. Phillberto shoved and Bigshot called putting him on overcards and happy to gamble it up. Shown 77 he failed to hit an out and another one bites the dust.

Rummy Coakes tournament life was the next to be put at stake as he min raised from the button. Phillberto called and then pushed on the flop with a lowly pair. Phillberto called with J9s leaving him flush draw outs, a gutshot straight draw and two overcards for a total of 18 outs twice making him a decent favourite. Rummy Coakes held up though and doubled up.

Moocher met his end when shoving all-in from the small blind against Rummy Coakes who called Moocher’s shove with Q8o and took his stack when his A9 romped home leaving him just behind in chips for the heads-up battle with Phillberto.

It was then down to heads-up and with Blinds very the blinds at $64/$128 it started off with an all-in by Phillberto. With Don not catching any cards for a while Philllberto’s pre-flop allin aggression paid off. With Don down to a small stack Phillberto took a gamble with K9o calling Rummy Coakes shove with 42s. He spiked a 2 on the river and was back in business. Continued aggression by Phillberto saw him grind Don down and again as a shortish stack Rummy pushed. Phillberto called with K9 again but this time was up against K3 and Phillberto held up to claim the well polished trophy from Lamma’s very own Spice boy not to mention a nice little side-pot of US$1,500 and raising the same amount for Lamma Fun day charity.

BigShot from Seoul said...

Greetings from the Walker Hill Casino and Hotel in lovely Seoul. That's right lovely.... because its a crisp fall day, the leaves are turning brown and the hotel/casino where i'm staying for this conference is situated on top of a hill over looking the water. The cooler weather also showcases the Korean babes in their very stylish winter coats and knee boots.

With not much to do at this conference, plenty of time for poker...Monday night - one poker table going at KWon1,000/2,000 (HK$6.50/HK$13). Minimum buy-in KWon200,000 (HK$2,600) and off we go.Fairly tight at first against a mixture of Korean american homeboys and some real American jar head types. Having a little trouble adjusting to
1)cash game since i've been playing mainly tourneys on line,
2)full nine person table,and
3)having to actually talk to people as i play

...Play it cool but the game is pretty fast and aggresive. Typical opening raise is HK$95 to HK$127. Lots of action, lots of reraising. Slowly get into the swing of things but my calibration is slightly off and am a little too tight.Unlike Phil, I really can't remember my hands but get felted twice in a roughly four hour session and leave with my tail between my legs down HK$2,550 for the night.Tuesday night. Get everything i need done, quick trip to the gym and down to the casino by 7 pm. Shorthanded table but i'm feeling much better. Recalibrate and things are going well. Slowing the playas file in and two tables going. At mine, two guys with big stacks throwing around HK$637 (KWon100,000) raises like its going out of style. Luckily for me, one of them doesn't know what he is doing and i take him down full house over flush - is there any better beat that that? for the winner of course - for about HK$3,800. A little later on, I'm dealt AA and KK back to back and both hold up. After a couple of hours i'm up HK$4,450.Did i mention free food and drink for the playas? Tell the pit what you want from any of the hotel restaurants and when its ready, they send you off to the dining room to munch it down.Had a beautiful warn onion tart with asparagus and a lobster bolognaise spagetti.Back to the table and its getting late night and the regulars start rolling in. Good players. And over the coming few hours get taken down big time twice for about HK$3,500 each time.As i said, can't remember the exact details but the first was straight over two pair and the second, to end my evening, was KK over QQ. I had QQ and raised under the gun, it folded around to the cut off who reraised by about 5x the pot. He had been playing very loose and very aggresive all night. Pushing for the straddle and raising every limped pot. I put him all in and he called and his KK held up.Marathon session that started at 7 pm and ended at 3 am. Down another HK$2,550 bringing my two day loss to HK$5,100.Tonight is my last night and back up for it ready or not...

Tight at the top. I had to recover from bigger losses to get where I was. My play has been patchy. I keep seeming to lose my pre-flop all-ins. Latest one was AA v KK v QQ with KK taking hitting trips. Both me and QQ had bigger stacks so I did get a little money back but these results make it pretty difficult to score a winning session. In fact I had to fight tilt on a few occasions. I actually managed to recover a decent chunk of my losses on a hand where I didn't play trips as fast as I should have. I end up hitting Quads Rockets with my AQ. He has KK and quite reasonbly thought he was good with Aces over Kings full house only to lose his stack.

Got off to a poor start this week as well. Turning a $75 gain into $50 loss in some sloppy end of session play.

Tilt and Bust

It's been a rocky week for me on the poker front. Having kicked off the week with a significant losing session losing on all four tables I played on I am now $200 down at 50NL. Having beaten 25NL by 7PTBB/100 my expectation was that I should be beating 50NL by 4-7PTBB/100 but its not panning out that way. I lost two stacks on Monday. A set over set situation on a dry board which I could do nothing firstly. Second was an interesting situation where I reraised the cut-off from the button guy three times in a row. The third time he play back and reraised me big. Holding Pocket 8s I had a hand but by no means a monster in 3 bet pot. I shoved thinking I could get a fold as his range was a lot bigger than it would normally be. He called with AQo making me a slight favourite but the cards didn't fall my way.My play suffered a little as a result and I didn't make any progress in the rest of the session.

My session started yesterday started with 2 all-ins in the first 10 minutes of play. First was another set over set situation. Ouch. Second was all-in pre-flop for $55. My Pocket Kings watched a horror flop of AQJxx meaning pretty much every hand he might have had was beating me and sure enough he showed Queens to win the hand. My play temporarily suffered and I verged on tilt for another 15 minutes before reigning myself in and playing solid poker. I realised I had lost on the last tables I had played. With a win rate of 60% on 25NL that was a pretty harsh sight.

I recovered the $100 evetually after stacking a medium stack with a beautiful set over set situation in my favour. My tilt induced $25 that I threw away I never won back though and that is a vital lesson to learn. Its those $$$ that are the simultaneously the easiest to avoid (you know you are making bad plays) but the hardest to actually do.

I'm now $300 down on my high-water mark and hope my luck turns soon. If I lose another $200 at 50NL I'll drop down to 25NL for a while I think but still confident that won't happen although it could take a while to get back into positive territory. I need to re-find my patience - I think I've been pushing a bit hard of late. I need to pick my spots a little more carefully.

I also meet Moocher spitting feathers as he bemoans the cruel nature of poker. 9 months of grinding which left him a few hundred dollars to the good were wiped out in two short weeks and its a surprise BUSTO for Moocher. Reduced to lowly free-rolls for the time being. He also manages to get his chat blocked from Poker Stars for his colourful vocabulary that followed his final beat which was quite fittingly Aces being cracked by Q8o.

WIll he return to try again? Watch this space.

Well its looking like a disastrous week for Lamma Poker. Moocher goes from looking very positive into a free-fall towards busto. Bigshot previously dipping his toe into negative territory waters is now up to his knees. Deadly has to work late into the night to minimise his deficit for the week. Similarly I try to put in the hours at the weekend to make up for some bad beats but fail to turn things around in time and end up almost making thing even worse with some bad play.

We await positive news from Rummy Coakes who blew us all away last week with his 180 man tourney win to ensure the black clouds gathering over Lamma poker have a silver lining of sorts.

Edit - And what a silver lining it proved to be. Having crossed paths with Rummy on Saturday night he kept his winning streak to himself. Very modest. He is ripping up the 45 man SNGs at the moment and racks up the biggest winning week by anyone to date. Add that to last week when he took down the biggest tournament pot he is racking up a record a week.

Will we see a different Rummy at the next Live game or will it just be extra cash in his pocket to burn. So it's now looking like the online race is on and the a big surge from the bag of the field for Rummy Coakes looks likely to shake things up!
