Table 'Salvia' 6-max Seat #5 is the button
Seat 1: Phillberto01 ($50 in chips)
Seat 2: OzzyOwn ($50.50 in chips)
Seat 3: plj1 ($51.40 in chips)
Seat 4: ikdoemee ($55.85 in chips)
Seat 5: a_Kem_card ($51.25 in chips)
Seat 6: whatsurbench ($69.30 in chips)
whatsurbench: posts small blind $0.25
Phillberto01: posts big blind $0.50
*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Phillberto01 [9d 9c]
OzzyOwn: folds
plj1: calls $0.50
ikdoemee: folds
a_Kem_card: folds
whatsurbench: raises $2.50 to $3
The oversized bet I read as being a big hand so I decide to try and hit a 9 and stack him.
Phillberto01: calls $2.50
plj1: folds
*** FLOP *** [Ts 8s 4s]
He really has to bet this pot out and fold out any spade but he chooses to check and give me a free card.
whatsurbench: checks
I’m happy to take it.
Phillberto01: checks
*** TURN *** [Ts 8s 4s] [9h]
whatsurbench: bets $1.50
Again he gives any spade or any Jack or 7 odds to draw out.
Phillberto01: raises $5.10 to $6.60
I perhaps make too small a raise here. $5 call from him to win $20 (plus some additional implied odds). A high spade would call. My mistake was normally you would want to price a flush draw in here knowing you will bust them if the flush draw and full house land except in this case with three spades on the board the full house won’t ever make a flush. Having said that Pocket pair with a spade is going to be playing it more aggressively so a pocket pair is feasible
whatsurbench: calls $5.10
*** RIVER *** [Ts 8s 4s 9h] [Qh]
whatsurbench: checks
Phillberto01: bets $13
Jacks and Queens now beat me. I presume he would bet though so I bet what I think an amount a worried bigger pair would call.
whatsurbench: calls $13
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Phillberto01: shows [9d 9c] (three of a kind, Nines)
whatsurbench: shows [Ac Ad] (a pair of Aces)
Phillberto01 collected $43.50 from pot
He at least wanted to keep the pot manageable with his rockets which is understandable but should have c-bet none the less and slowed down if called.

Back from a couple of nights in Macau.
My first trip in almost two years and my first visit to the Venetian, which is pretty spectacular in size but pretty preposterous overall. With my parents in town, it was a good opportunity to get away with the trouble and strife for a few days leaving the kids at home.
The Venetian rooms were great but it took some going to make your way around the hotel. At least half a mile from room to gym and probably more to the taxi rank. Caught up with former Lamma residents Dale and Mable for some Fernandos and also a place called A Petisqueira, which is a little more refined and less rustic but good value as well.
Lots of time for poker though the scene was found a little wanting.
First night – a quick tour around the Venetian and a (quicker) trip to the gym. Dinner at Fernandos – the place never changes – and off to the Grand Waldo, where the second floor poker room had exactly zero players. About 15 tables, of which dealers sat at two of them made for a pretty lonely sight at 10 pm on a Monday night. In fact, the whole Grand Waldo casino looked pretty lame and empty.
Dale had mentioned that many of the casinos were not doing well and that many of the construction projects were running into financing problems, construction delays, permit approvals even for Mr Ho. He said everything changed when the Head of the Lands Department was arrested. Even the Grand Lisboa has not received its occupation permit for the hotel, though the casino has been open for about two years.
Having moved there about a year and a half ago, he lives in pretty swish two story 2,400 sq ft apartment above the New Century Hotel on Taipa. Life is good but he reports there is not much to do except hang out at the MGM Grand bar.
Anyway, slink back to the Venetian to play some blackjack after my poker disappointment but my heart isn’t in it and retreat to the room.
Is it me or do the hookers look a lot younger? Must be me cause Mrs Big Shot makes the same comment.
The next day sees me putting in some hours with the wife, walking the markets, seeing the ruins, having lunch etc before she offers me an out back to the hotel (casino), but not before a quick reconnaissance trip to the Grand Lisboa where I’m told the other poker room is. Much better luck here… Two tables going at HK$10 and $20 but with a min $400 and max $2,000 buy in.
No time to get into it as I head back to the hotel for another quick trip to the gym and then dinner again with Dale and Mable, after which I ask to get dropped off at the Grand Lisboa. …
Five tables going with one at HK$25/HK$50. Jump in at HK$10/$20 with a $1,000 buy in and off we go. Strange mix of Israelis, French, mainlanders, Pilipinos, Hong Kong Chinese and a Singaporean. But generally a pretty nice game for me. Pretty passive. Lots of calling. Family flops. Standard raise is $100 and very little reraising. Standard is not very high. Dealers are not very good but generally pretty pleasant.
Moves later into the night and the game gets more interesting and I’m feeling more comfortable. Take down two big pots, both on full houses. Sitting about $4k up and watching the hours tick away. Its getting later and later. I’m flopping back and forth between staying up all night and going back for a couple of hours. But I’m feeling good, the game is not that tough – much much much softer than in Korea – and I’m having a good time.
Then I lose about half my stack set over set…. What are you going to do?
Having a good laugh with a French guy who has been travelling around China and hasn’t had a poker fix for over a month so is now into his 14th hour and hasn’t seen any of Macau yet. I myself started and 10 pm and finally leave at 6 am. Another marathon session..,,.. and I curse myself for not having found the place on the first night.
End up finishing HK$2,700 to the good, which almost, but not quite offsets my blackjack loses. Btw, I’ve sworn off blackjack forever – that used to be my casino game until I discovered poker – but now it doesn’t give me near the buzz that poker does.
We definitely need to go back. No need to stay at the Venetian, since its Macau, not Taipa where the action is. Who’s up for the Lamma PEx bossing around a soft game at the Grand Lisboa one of these weekends?
Have made a Faustian bargain with Mrs Big Shot. She'll allow me to take a weekend away to Manila or Macau for a poker tournament as long as I switch all the lights off whenever I leave a room at home.
That's her thing and I'll gladly make that trade.
When and where fellas?
Very interesting story, thanks!
I would love to visit the tables in Macau in the new year.
