It's been a rocky week for me on the poker front. Having kicked off the week with a significant losing session losing on all four tables I played on I am now $200 down at 50NL. Having beaten 25NL by 7PTBB/100 my expectation was that I should be beating 50NL by 4-7PTBB/100 but its not panning out that way. I lost two stacks on Monday. A set over set situation on a dry board which I could do nothing firstly. Second was an interesting situation where I reraised the cut-off from the button guy three times in a row. The third time he play back and reraised me big. Holding Pocket 8s I had a hand but by no means a monster in 3 bet pot. I shoved thinking I could get a fold as his range was a lot bigger than it would normally be. He called with AQo making me a slight favourite but the cards didn't fall my way.My play suffered a little as a result and I didn't make any progress in the rest of the session.
My session started yesterday started with 2 all-ins in the first 10 minutes of play. First was another set over set situation. Ouch. Second was all-in pre-flop for $55. My Pocket Kings watched a horror flop of AQJxx meaning pretty much every hand he might have had was beating me and sure enough he showed Queens to win the hand. My play temporarily suffered and I verged on tilt for another 15 minutes before reigning myself in and playing solid poker. I realised I had lost on the last tables I had played. With a win rate of 60% on 25NL that was a pretty harsh sight.
I recovered the $100 evetually after stacking a medium stack with a beautiful set over set situation in my favour. My tilt induced $25 that I threw away I never won back though and that is a vital lesson to learn. Its those $$$ that are the simultaneously the easiest to avoid (you know you are making bad plays) but the hardest to actually do.
I'm now $300 down on my high-water mark and hope my luck turns soon. If I lose another $200 at 50NL I'll drop down to 25NL for a while I think but still confident that won't happen although it could take a while to get back into positive territory. I need to re-find my patience - I think I've been pushing a bit hard of late. I need to pick my spots a little more carefully.
I also meet Moocher spitting feathers as he bemoans the cruel nature of poker. 9 months of grinding which left him a few hundred dollars to the good were wiped out in two short weeks and its a surprise BUSTO for Moocher. Reduced to lowly free-rolls for the time being. He also manages to get his chat blocked from Poker Stars for his colourful vocabulary that followed his final beat which was quite fittingly Aces being cracked by Q8o.
WIll he return to try again? Watch this space.

Patience is a virtue and gambling is a sin. You do the math.

Also I heard it's better to burn out than to fade away...or something.
Greetings from the Walker Hill Casino and Hotel in lovely Seoul. That's right lovely.... because its a crisp fall day, the leaves are turning brown and the hotel/casino where i'm staying for this conference is situated on top of a hill over looking the water. The cooler weather also showcases the Korean babes in their very stylish winter coats and knee boots.
With not much to do at this conference, plenty of time for poker...
Monday night - one poker table going at KWon1,000/2,000 (HK$6.50/HK$13). Minimum buy-in KWon200,000 (HK$2,600) and off we go.
Fairly tight at first against a mixture of Korean american homeboys and some real American jar head types. Having a little trouble adjusting to 1)cash game since i've been playing mainly tourneys on line, 2)full nine person table, and 3)having to actually talk to people as i play...
Play it cool but the game is pretty fast and aggresive. Typical opening raise is HK$95 to HK$127. Lots of action, lots of reraising. Slowly get into the swing of things but my calibration is slightly off and am a little too tight.
Unlike Phil, I really can't remember my hands but get felted twice in a roughly four hour session and leave with my tail between my legs down HK$2,550 for the night.
Tuesday night. Get everything i need done, quick trip to the gym and down to the casino by 7 pm. Shorthanded table but i'm feeling much better. Recalibrate and things are going well. Slowing the playas file in and two tables going. At mine, two guys with big stacks throwing around HK$637 (KWon100,000) raises like its going out of style. Luckily for me, one of them doesn't know what he is doing and i take him down full house over flush - is there any better beat that that? for the winner of course - for about HK$3,800. A little later on, I'm dealt AA and KK back to back and both hold up. After a couple of hours i'm up HK$4,450.
Did i mention free food and drink for the playas? Tell the pit what you want from any of the hotel restaurants and when its ready, they send you off to the dining room to munch it down.
Had a beautiful warn onion tart with asparagus and a lobster bolognaise spagetti.
Back to the table and its getting late night and the regulars start rolling in. Good players. And over the coming few hours get taken down big time twice for about HK$3,500 each time.
As i said, can't remember the exact details but the first was straight over two pair and the second, to end my evening, was KK over QQ. I had QQ and raised under the gun, it folded around to the cut off who reraised by about 5x the pot. He had been playing very loose and very aggresive all night. Pushing for the straddle and raising every limped pot. I put him all in and he called and his KK held up.
Marathon session that started at 7 pm and ended at 3 am. Down another HK$2,550 bringing my two day loss to HK$5,100.
Tonight is my last night and back up for it ready or not...
