After my terrible start to the week getting oversetted and drawn out on in a monster pot it was a quiet week. With boxes around and with my internet up and running I managed a couple of sessions yesterday. All was going well and I recovered $70 of my earlier $90 loss on my Poker4Ever account. I managed to get felted though and give it all back as bedlam broke all around and I played on in a stressful atmostphere.

I rejoined later and once again started well before losing pot after pot after reraising a caller of a very loose player. My raise put the short stack all allin. The other player chose to come along. With $24 in the pot and me with just a pot sized bet I shoved after being checked to on a very low flop. I was called and obviously wasn't too happy. When they flipped their hands I was up against A3 and K3. K3 called a pot sized shove with a flush draw and hit to take the pot.

After that I made some terrible plays and watched my funds slip down.

Oh well the start of a new quarter and time to draw a line under my worst quarter yet. Its still a winning one but this is my poker low point so far. Running bad and playing bad. Not a good combo.

Bigshot also continues his slump and dwindles perilously close to busting out.

Deadly manages a winning week however. Racking up a $5 increase. Time well spent.

We await Moocher's update - hopefully he can keep the Lamma flag flying.

Finally - a big thank you to all those that helped in the move.

You are representing a 9 there I think. Unless you have been superaggressive you have to let this go. I think you will see 88 or A9 there 90% of the time (22 possibly if he didn't believe you?). Air 10% although that may rise if you've been trying to take down a lot of these paired flop hands.

Mmmm. A big overpair is unlikely unless he is really bad. You are both likely to have mid suited connectors type hands there. I can see him making this play with trips. Except your two pair makes the more likely trips Ts and 8s less likely.
There is also the possibilty he made a move from the blinds after you both showed weakness (expecting to take it down on theflop or on a c-bet). He then hit the nuts and hoped to get paid off from T8 or a flush/straight draw combo.
AcKc maybe a possibility. Trying to push off a lot of hands and still having 18 outs.
He may also have a big draw combo himself. I'm thinking you can't call with much and if you do hehas a lot of outs.
If he is bad he may just be playing JJ scared and worried about playing a big pot OOP with somany draws. Its a tough to put him on a hand. He has something but its either the nuts or a scared bet.The preflop raise means he is more likely to have a decent hand but the push is more conducive withthe nuts (or near nuts) or a combo draw. Let me plump for Jc9c, 66 or 97.

Let me plump for 'Walking back to Houston' - AcKc.

Looks good to me. I like the river value bet size.
Hand range: TT, 55 - I think he may have just called a c-bet with these hands planning toraise on the turn but then became worried about AK after the turn card. QJs, QTs - A two pair hand seems the most plausible hand for him. KJ, KQ - Chances of having a King are less likely with three being accounted for but a pair draw combo is a possible. I presume he would have shoved with a King though.
I think your line looks like a big pair or trips. Your bet is good to tempt a call from anything that beats AA I'd say.
Let me plump for QJs or 55.

I seem to be getting caught by a lot of these pots. Betting out what seems to be enough to price out draws but then feeling pot committed and calling and then realising I did give the implied odds to let them call.

My thinking was that a second pot sized bet would maybe scare away an Ace which I didn't want. I think I could have got away from a push if the flush draw hit there but much more difficult to get away from someone calling with the straight draw. I think I need to give some more thought to my bet sizing in places like this.

Also I think it could well have been a fold on that river. I had shown strength throughout so I think two pair is the minimum he is doing this with so probably a fold.

Queen was definitely a bad card to land. So should I have got away here or at least made it an easier decision by betting more on the turn?

Shortly afterwards while on my last hand on the table I raised UTG+1 with AK and my cbet on a Kxx wasn't called. The same guy called again with a raise from UTG with JJ and on a Txx rainbow flop he called my pot sized $3.75 c-bet. I was pushing on the river no matter what but it was another undercard and he called off his last $4.50 with just A high (A5 too).

Just $5 to the good but I'll take it after getting drawn out on again in that big hand.

I'm working on a strategy for deciding what flops I need to pot and which I can bet less on. Basically letting the board and player dictate my c-bet size rather than my hand itself.

Well it looks like Lamma's high stakes player has climbed to a healthy lead at the top of the Banyan tree. Bigshot runs up a nice positive figure to launch him up the table and keep his hopes of retaining the live title alive. Spicer doesn't have the run of the cards and has to contend with a few feltings but as usual makes a late recovery. Phillberto manages to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and only the fact that he is at the bottom of the table stops Don from sliding further.

So the first hand two hands it looks like I can
t/don't want to get away from. If it was an unraised pot is there an argument for folding at any point?

Prior to this I was running well and was about $30 up.

I don't have the hand history but it went something like this.

Its folded to Luckyboj who raises 1.75 on the button.
I reraise to 7.75
He calls.
Flop is Q63 rainbow. (pot $15.75)
I bet $11.
He minraises to $22
I think and call.
Turn is an 8.
He pushes for $27.
I fold my pocket tens.
So what did I do wrong?

I actually played pretty well apart from this hand. Was up three buyins on a 20NL table before it broke up. Ended up losing $90 though.

I really could do with the Poker Gods smiling on me but my luck will turn I'm sure.

Ribs and Poker - Live

Hands from the live game...in no particular order.

Deadly calls in the cutoff and Moocher checks in the Big Blind.
Flop KK3
Moocher bets and Deadly calls
Turn and river are seeming blanks and Moocher moves allin on the river.

The Birth of a Winning Player

A quick well done to Moocher on a six starred Official Poker Ranking. Currently rated as:
Overall OPR Rank: 65,742 of 862,908
With a ROI of 95% and an ITM rate of 30%

I think we've seen the emergence of another winning player in 2008.

As Bigshot has shown from his live performances he is perfectly capable of beating online poker so we await him reversing his online fortunes.

I'm sure Lamma Jim can master beating the low stakes game if he perseveres and sticks to his game-plan.

Maybe we can have five positive figures by the end of the year.

I discover torrents and have seen some cracking movies this week so happy to pass onto anyone that fancies watching an alternative screen for a while.

I have the live action to add and will do that tonight.

6 more days to the end of the first quarter and some serious results required for me to post anything like my expected winnings.

Deadly gets set over setted by the Queens and its bye bye to his stack and a winning week.
I have a short stacking experiment that goes badly wrong and just coudn't fit in much playing this week. What is more I've let my bonus chasing time-period expire so will now get off of Interpoker which doesn't seem to like me.
Jim can head off to the shores of blighty with a winning week behind him albeit not making much of a dent in his annual losses to date.
Bigshot drops down to 25NL and can hopefully get to work on recuperating his losses.
Only Moocher has any happy tales to tell this week. He is on a bit of a roll on the $3+0.25 tourneys on Stars.
Overall OPR Rank: 86,491 of 852,929 is his current standing.

He also takes the gold medal spot in a 45 man tourney at the weekend. Glad someone is flying the flag for a lacklustre Lamma.

Roll on Sunday.

Poker lite - Poker shite

I started off the week well. Played a planned short session. Played two tables of 10GBPNL and finished up $25. That was me finished for the night and I enjoyed a couple of Scottish Whiskies and watched a movie. I had an unexpected window of opportunity and played again though. I made some horrendous plays. Twice against the same opponent on a paired board not believing he had hit and managed to get felted with pocket rockets when I really should have known better. I was $75 down at one point but managed to stack someone to recover a buy-in with trips.

Bad start to the week and I only managed a short session at Poker4Ever before footie training. US$15 to the good there and played well.

I was planning to post my Monday night early hands but too embarrassed to post my losing hands so I won't.

Reports from Lamma Jim are of a dwindling bankroll but Moocher indicates his tourney rankings are doing well so I check them out.

Overall OPR Rank: 112,613 of 848,562

Showing an ROI of 83% on 3.25 games he is starting to show some consistant form. I've not heard a bad beat story for a while which is always a good thing.

Nice one Mooch -don't blow at next week's cash game (unless against me).

Its something I've neglected as Moocher is the only player that perseveres with tourneys and is the only player that maintains a ranking.

With a busy weekend I may not have time to reverse my still losing tally but will do my best to. Seems my plans for the year are drifting away from me. C'est la vie.

Happy Anniversary

While I did celebrate my third anniversary last week I have now crossed another significant landmark - a year of online poker.

I do believe I have now been playing online poker for exactly a year. While the latter seems at times to have drastically reduced the first celebration ever coming to pass its been an interesting journey.

Around 4K to the good.

Prior to starting the blog I played almost exclusively Sit and Go's for the first few months. Cleared a few bonii and started building my bankroll. When I built my bankroll up to around $350 I decided that cash games would be a much faster way to earn cash. I jumped into 5oNL and watched my money disappear quicklyAs my previous profits disappeared I dropped down to 25NL and once I delved into negative territory and using my initial deposit I made the step down to lowly 10NL. From there I've bonused and grinded my way to a healthy bankroll including cashing out my initial deposit meaning everything online is pure profit.

After a year I'd say I'm confident of beating 20NL and don't have enough hands at 50NL to make any informed judgements. If this time next year I'm regularly beating 50NL and toying with the idea of moving up and have a 10K bankroll behind me then I'll be happy with my progress.

Quarter 1 - target reassessment - Geek alert!

January Target: +$300 January Actual +355 (+55 on expectation)
February Target: +$500 February Actual +5 (-495 on expectatiom)
March Target: +$450 Currently tracking towards +$403 (tracking at -77 on expectation)

So I was hoping to be +$1,250 by the end of the first quarter and now my expectation is +$733
so now tracking at 40.5% behind target.

Bonus Target
(Ultimate Bet $50, Pacific Poker $100 - already 75% completed- and Interpoker $100 + tbc).
Earned as follows:
Week 6 (11/2)- $100 - Cleared 12/2 Bonus
Week 7 (18/2)- $50 Bonus - Cleared 11/2
Week 10 (3/3) - $100 Bonus - 70% of the way through - Now at least over 2 weeks behind schedule.
Week 13 (31/3) - $100 Bonus - As above.

By dropping down in level I've cost myself a couple of weeks in bonus chasing and that should impact $100 on this months figures. Hopefully I can make oup ground and at least be starting the next quarter on the way to another bonus.

Pocket Rockets hit trips on a scary board

Saturday night and I manage to get another two 10GBP tables up and running.

Game #5706134833: Hold'em NL (£0.05/£0.10)
Table "Mareann" Seat 1 is the button.
Seat 1: BujtiLaci (£15.61 in chips)
Seat 2: Joh080661 sits out
Seat 3: Danlundy7 (£16.13 in chips)
Seat 4: And130992 (£5.95 in chips)
Seat 5: Phillbert (£10.52 in chips)
Seat 6: iliekmilk (£10.13 in chips)
Danlundy7: posts small blind £0.05
And130992: posts big blind £0.10
----- HOLE CARDS -----
dealt to Phillbert [Qc Kd]
A very marginal hand here to raise but 5 handed I raise it up.
Phillbert: raises to £0.40
iliekmilk: folds
BujtiLaci: folds
Danlundy7: calls £0.35
And130992: calls £0.30
----- FLOP ----- [2h 7d Kc]
Two callers from the blinds so I now have position.
Danlundy7: bets £0.40
And130992: folds
Phillbert: calls £0.40
Its a dry flop and I expect to be ahead here but I don't want to build a huge pot.
----- TURN ----- [2h 7d Kc][4c]
Danlundy7: bets £0.40
Phillbert: raises to £1.20
He makes a second donk bet. I think he has a piece here but I reckon I'm ahead and don't want t give him a card that cheap so I raise it up enough to price out him trying to hit 2 pairs while building a medium pot.
Danlundy7: calls £0.80
----- RIVER ----- [2h 7d Kc 4c][5c]
Danlundy7: bets £1
Its a weak bet given the pot and I'm happy to call it down.
Phillbert: calls £1
----- SHOW DOWN -----
Danlundy7: shows [7h 9h] (A Pair of Sevens, King high)
Phillbert: shows [Qc Kd] (A Pair of Kings, Queen high)
Phillbert collected £6.08 from Main pot

A pretty standard hand here I think. I pasted and copied it by accident but thought I'd post it anyway.

Nice hand to see and I make it a little bigger to take into account the limper before me.
Dea271011: calls £0.40
Dav200651: folds
Heads up, nice.
----- FLOP ----- [Td Ah Kh]
I hit trips but we
Phillbert: bets £0.80
Dea271011: calls £0.80
----- TURN ----- [Td Ah Kh][8d]
Dazzler70 joins the table at seat #5
I'm losing slightly on one table so decide to switch to another table and it pays dividends. I think I've been missing out on lot of money by sticking around tables where I have little or no edge. I've queued for two tables and suddenly both options come up together which temporarily locks my computer. I think I'm going to be folded out but manage to get back at the controls to see I've auto-checked and he has raised. Phew!
Phillbert: checks
Dea271011: bets £1.80
Two flush draws and straight draw possibilities here! My A of diamonds and the A hearts on the board make both less likely but it is not a table for slow-playing trips. I raise it up big enough to price out all draws and hope I'm up against lower trips or a stubborn 2 pair.
Phillbert: raises to £7
Dea271011: calls £5.20
He flat calls and I'm worried about combo draws.
----- RIVER ----- [Td Ah Kh 8d][5h]
Phillbert: bets £8.52 and is all-in
If I'm beat I'm getting put allin and I have to call so I might as well stick it in myself.
Dea271011: calls £8.52
I'm nervous.
----- SHOW DOWN -----
Phillbert: shows [As Ad] (Three of a kind, Aces, King high)
Dea271011: shows [Ac 2s] (A Pair of Aces, King high)
Phillbert collected £32.06 from Main pot
A bad call by him there. What exactly did he think he was beating?

I've now used up my poker ration for the week and the doors are locked. Nice to see my roll build up back close to where it was before my big loss and I'm starting to make slow progress towards clearing the Interpoker Bonus although still a bit of work to do to get back in black there although my bonus should be enough to ensure I cash out with more than I cashed in.

Sweet

I'm playing away at a table targetting two fish and targetting two players and building my stack when an aggro donk arrives. He is raising 75% of hands and isnt' slowing down any and is running over the table.

I'll settle for that flop.
CollMe: bets $5
I have position and think I'll get more out of him again by letting him bet into me.
Phillbert: calls $5

----- TURN ----- [Js 7c 5h][7d]
CollMe: bets $15
If he has the 7 then so be it. I'd be happy to see a fold now but I'm unlikely to improve and think the time has come to get it allin.

Phillbert: raises to $2.50
CollMe: raises to $24.40 and is all-in
Well he seems to want a fold here. He may have caught a hand but his range here is huge and I have to be ahead 95% of the time.

Phillberto Weekly +91 Total +461
Moocher Weekly -34 Total +36
Lamma_Jim Weekly -29 Total -158
Bigshot Bog Weekly -24 Total -310

Deadly manages to squeeze in more hours than normal but records a rather standard weekly increase. Splitting his time between microstakes Omaha and 100NL he was hoping for better but still he can't complain about logging in a 3 figure gain. At his current rate of gain he should be logging in a +$4,400 year.

I've got a few hands to share with you. Was copied in a rush from Poker Tracker this morning but think I got the big hands.

Bigshot manages a twin tabling 50NL 90 minute session on Sunday but sees his roll slide further. But what the hell his new BBQ rocks. He considers dropping down a level to see how he fares.

Lamma Jim continues on his downward path. Hopefully we can arrest the slide before he goes busto.

February Results

Deadly -65 for the month Total +736
Phillberto +5 for the month Total +360
Moocher +30 for the month Total +40
Lamma Jim -69 for the month Total -129
Bigshot -320 for the month Total -285

Well its pretty uninspiring figures all round for the shortest month of the year. Congratulations to Moocher for managing a second winning month and being the only person to manage a positive total for the month. Deadly and Phillberto both just about manage to make up for big losing sessions but not quite and hopefully can both return to winning form in March. Disappointment for Bigshot who loses focus and has to cope with a couple of big losing sessions. A little bit of patience required this month to try and get him back on track.

Lamma Jim sees his bankroll slip. Maybe post a few hands sir and see if we can provide some 'hive' wisdom bringing together the collective experience of the Lamma poker school to bear.

I've worked out the ongoing tallies on a scrap of paper so will have to add them in later. I do recall Spicer leads the way with Deadly on his tail. Phillberto lagging some way behind and Bigshot a few hundred to the good. Moocher sits in negative territory but only just.

Live in Lamma - Fifteen Hands

Here we have it. The hands that I can remember from the Saturday night extended live session. In a mostly random order. Feel free to share any others I may have missed.

Spicer v Phillberto

First hand - kicked off with a $20 raise Phillberto raise meeting a $50 reraise from Spicer in the blinds, with a premium pair perhaps which gets a Phillberto fold and first blood is drawn.

Its then Don, Don ,Don as hewins some nice pots and takes some more pots down with ovebets to accumulate the table's big stacks.

Deadly v Phillberto
A raise from Deadly is a called by Phillberto. The Flop comes Q85 rainbow. Deadly bets out for $20 and Phillberto reraises to $50. Deadly calls. The turn brings a low diamond. Deadly checks and Phillberto pushes for $160. Deadly thinks carefully but lays down.
Deadly shows QJ for top pair with a vulnerable kicker and Phillberto shows 78s for a succesful semi-bluff.

Don v Phillberto
A multi-way pot. A JJ9 flop. Three checks and Don leads out. Phillberto check-shoves for his depleted stack of around $100 and Don calls to be left with only runner runner outs and he sees another part of his initial stack depleted.
Phillberto shows KJ and Don was unwilling to laydown his A9.

Phillberto v Sham
One of many limped pots for the night. A flop of 446 with two clubs. Sham bets out in the small blind and is called by Spicer and Phillberto. Sham bets around half pot and is called by both again and the flush gets there on the turn. Sham bets again and leads out and this time Spicer gives up. Unperturbed by the flush possibility Sham leads out for $50. Phillberto calls.
Sham shows down a third four and Phillberto takes it down with 93s for the flush. A missed value bet from Phillberto who saw a monster under the bed with the paired board.

Phillberto v Spicer

A raised pot to $24 with Phillberto in position. A JJx flop and a flush draw. Phillberto bets out and is called. The flush draw completes on the turn and its checked to the river which is a King. Spicer checks and Phillberto leads for $28.
Spicer calls and loses to a full house and mucks.

Sham v Spicer
Its a Kxx flop. Spicer makes smallish value bets on each street and is called down. At showdown its a battle of the kickers
Sham's KJ beats Spicer's KT and Sham takes down a medium pot.

Spicer v Deadly
Spicer's stack is greatly diminished and he has tightened up and is waiting for a chance to double up. Deadly makes a raise in middle position. Spicer comes over the top and they end up allin preflop.
The match up is pocket Queen's for Spicer against Doug's AK. Spicer is a small favourite but neither can be faulted for their play.
A favourable flop and Turn for Spicer mean that only a third queen can allow Deadly to snatch it but its a blank and Spicer returns to approaching his starting stack.

Moocher v Bigshot
A9x with two diamonds on the flop and the money goes in sure and steady with a second 0 arriving on the turn and a flush draw getting their on the river. Moocher makes a dramatic push. Bigshot had around $575 in his stack before the hand so we are now looking at a monster pot of around $1,150 at stake. We saw some surprisingly poor hands at showdown last time. But this time Bigshot shows a rivered flush. Moocher had Pocket Aces which hit trips on the flop and then filled up in the turn always had a lock on the hand though and he proves the winnner of the biggest pot of Lamma Poker history.

Philberto v Don
Phillberto raises to $24 after a couple of limpers and its folds all round except Don who limp-calls from under the gun. Its a Qx3 flop. Don checks and Phillberto bets out for $30 and Don calls. Its a K on the turn and its checked by both. The river completes a flush and Don checks again. Phillberto opts to check behind. This time its not a missed value bet though as a check raise was imminent.
Don hit his trips on the flop with Pocket 3's and Phillberto escapes with most of his stack intact on what could have been an expensive pot if I'd decided to bet on the turn.

Deadly v Don
I'm missing the action on this hand. Doug makes a series of value bets only to get raised allin by Don on the river. He has to call of a $160 bet into maybe a $100 pot so he needs to be right more often than not. He makes the call and Don shows a brave bluff on bottom pair and Dougs top pair medium kicker stands up.

Deadly v Don
A raised pot and another tangle between the former custodian of a sizeable chunk of chips on the table to the soon to be posserssor of the largest chip real estate site on the table. Deadly further inflates the pot on the flop and Don calls him down. A third spade arrives on the turn and Deadly pushes. Don calls down and its another big pot at stake. The river brings a fourth spade meaning. Deadly shows flopped trip 9s which now look very vulnerable but Don called his stack off with A6(?) and top two pair. Unfortunately he didn't have a spade and Deadly's stack grows.

Moocher v Deadly
Moocher limps on the button and its a multiway pot with Deadly getting to see a flop in the Big Blind.
A low flop and the money starts to go in. Nothing dramatic but more money goes in on the turn. The river brings another low card and Deadly bets out. Moocher thinks about coming over the top but opts to just call. Moocher reveals Pocket Aces and he loses to Deadly's 63 which hit a straight. Not the way that pros recommend to play pocket rockets for sure but he did just take down the biggest Lamma pot so maybe we'll allow him to mix it up a little.

Don v Moocher
Its A34 on the flop and Don and Moocher are the only two willing to invest more money to see the turn. the turn is a 2 which sparks the rest of the money piling in after an allin from Don and Moocher decides to call. Moocher show an Ace with a ten kicker. Don has A5 for the straight and Rick is left with only two outs that can save him. He is dancing and whooping under the fairy lights when he gets his miracle card to save his stack and Don must be sick having already had to split a couple of pots on Axxx flops when having the board negate his better kicker and splitting pots that were otherwise coming his way.

Spicer v Bigshot
Bigshot in position in a raised pot. Its a flop that looks likely to have helped either of them. Low cards keep arriving and by the river there is a sizeable pot and a board of 22343. When the money goes in its looking likely to be a battle of overpairs. Spicer shows down KK and has to be expecting to be good but Bigshot produces an unexpected A5 from his metaphorical sleeve to felt Spicer.

Spicer v Sham
Its a 99x flop and Sham leads quite weakly. Spicer just calls with position. The turn sees a larger bet from Sham but still pricing in a flush draw to hang around. The flush hits on the river and Spicer checks. Sham doesn't consider the flush possibility and bets out big only to see a checkraise allin. He calls and is perhaps the only perhaps the only person to be surprised when Spicer shows down the flush.
Its the final felting of the night and soon after the chips are tallied and the cash divided.
