Frame of Mind

Played very briefly on Wednesday. I lost $20 on Poker4Ever on one hand playing 50NL. I raised pre-flop with T8 s and got one caller. A Qxx two suited flop and I c-bet and get called. My flush draw arrives on the turn and he has a pot sized bet left so I shove. He calls with T8s for the other flush draw. 9 cards for a win for a me. 9 cards for a win for him and the rest for a split. He takes it. I then head off home and play briefly before dinner with a baby in my lap and a in generally stressful environment. Fortuately its just GBP6 game and very possibly because of it raise in the cutoff and get reraised and I shove. He instacalls with Aces and the miracle doesn't happen. The other table I'm up against a short stack with AK. I reraise and then push on the flop and he calls with T9 which it on the flop.

I lose $20 in a very short session and don't return for more eroding my previous climb-back.

While playing AK this strong can work by getting folds out of TT and JJ etc at these levels people are more inclined to call and less inclined to 3bet with anything less than a premium so I need to look at my Big Slick play at the lower level.

I make amends while playing 20NL on Poker4Ever whilst waiting for footie training to start and pull back the previous days deficits plus one mighty dollar more. I felt I played really well and made some good, well sized value bets. On one hand I hit a straight on the river that also brought a flush. He made a pot sized raise having hit trips on the turn and checking. I also hit a full house against a rivered flush to win $16 and picked up a few smaller pots and smelt trouble and bailed early on a couple of crucial pots.

Not much progress being made once again this week. Hopefully the live game will be a chance to make amends.

Monte Carlo or Bust?

I squeeze in an hour of two tabling on the 6GBP tables. I rack up a $20 win and call it a night. I'm enjoying dominating the games again and limited myself to one calling of a bet I later regretted. Bigshot tries to make amends for his dramatic slide by limiting his playing time and keeping his focus and recovers by a similar amount.

Moocher hovers around the breaking even mark at the moment although confesses to having been done $100 as his low-water mark. He is living the dream at the moment with his entry into the fourth Stage of the EPT qualifiers. He tripled up early on when he slow played his pocket Aces, hit trips and saw a shove and a caller in front of him. He then folded his way to the next round - even mucking pocket 10s as the action swirled around him. A win in the next stage one could argue would actually make him the biggest winner of the year so far although actually turning that into cash will be a challenge and a half.

In my short term mission of turning around my losing stats at Interpoker I'm half-way through wiping out my 6GBP losses. The 10GBP losses are only $10 so around half a stack which I hope won't take too long. By then I hope I have a big enough stack to stand up to variance on the GBP20 tables and 25NL to negate the negative stats there at which point I expect to claim a $100 and leave!

As for the Monte Carlo question - Rick may well be able to update us on the latest status of his EPT mission soon. The month end stats are a few days away and he is bang on level for the year. Will he manage to end the month showing a positive figure and take a baby step away from the threat of Bust?

Week 8 - Feb 18-25

Lamma Poker Exchange 618 (-711)

Deadly Weekly -100 Total +701
Phillberto Weekly -294 Total +216
Moocher Weekly +28 Total +8
Lamma_Jim Weekly -5 Total -108
Bigshot Bog Weekly -340 Total -199

The Lamma poker exchange sees its biggest ever crash. A rusty but gung ho Deadly creates an early deficit and then just as he has almost dragged himself back to a profitable play slides back down the muddy slope. Phillberto faces his own crisis unaware that Bigshot is also having a disastrous week and he plunges into a deficit for the year losing almost 40% of his new year buy-in.

Lamma Jim starts the week off badly but is now using a trial version of Poker Tracker and seems to have sharpened his game. He can't quite claw back the initial deficit in time for the Monday roll-check but shows great promise for next week and I anticipate a winning week for him this week as he gets off to a winning start.

Moocher chalks up the only praiseworthy performance of the week. He brings himself back into the black and also embarks on a mission for EPT glory. Signing up for the chance to win a $15,000 package to Euro-glory he has now navigated his way through 4 of 6 stages. With the ticket valued at $215 he is getting close to his crack at the big time. Do we have the new Jamie Gold on his hands?

So with over half of its value wiped out in one week how will the Lamma Poker Exchange respond? Good luck to everyone. Maybe we need a Saturday night live game to hone the skills?

No use Crying Over Spilt Milk

I decide to get back on the horse last night after putting the small pair to bed. Small pair - do you see what I'm doing there? I re-check my Interpoker balance. $20 - ouch. I look at my Session stats for this Interpoker visit. A losing player at 6GBP, a losing player at 10GBP, a losing player at 25NL, a losing player at GBP20. Not good reading.

I consider buying in for another $200 but my confidence has taken a beating. I'm $60 at 6GBP level. 10 whole buyins and I resolve to beat each level one at a time until I get back into credit or clear my bonus.

It could be a long process as the bonus clears exceptionally slowly at the lower limits but thats the route I have planned. I take my first few steps on the long journey and win back $16 playing the lowly tables. Even so I call a few river overbets seeing them as bluffs only to be proved wrong so I should have taken more.

It may not be the most profitable route to take to drop down levels but something I feel I must be able to do and a great opportunity to regain my shattered confidence.

Disaster for Scotland!

It's Saturday night and as I'm waiting for my PC to carry out its ever slower booting up I have a quick visit to Poker4Ever on the laptop. I lose $10 on an early hand and buy back in to the max. I raise under the gun with a highly speculative 35s. I flop a straight on a 467 board. The action explodes on the flop and we end up getting our whole stacks in there. He has trip 7s but draws out in me and felts me. I log off to try my luck on Interpoker and work on the bonus accumulation. Its not about to get any better for me.

In no particular order these are the hands that Lady Luck, variance or whatever you call that tilt inducing beast decided to deal me.

KK against AA. It all went in preflop against a loose aggressive opponent. I'm well behind so this is just one of those situations. I shrug it off.
AQs - I reraise in position and get a flush draw. I get it in and get called -even so I'm hoping I may have two overcards and a flush draw making me a favourite against say JJ. Its KK and I miss my 24 outs.
AK v JJ - I rereaise and hit an Ace on the flop. We get it allin but he still has 2 outs. He hits both of them for quads.
KJ v K6 - I raise under the gun in a short handed table and get called by the Big Blind. There is a flush draw on board and possible straight draw. I am put to a very difficult decision and opt to get it allin. He hit 2 pair on the flop with K6 and I lose a stack.
88 v AT - It's another reraised pot against a short stack. Its a safe flop and I get it all in. He calls with 2 overcards and 2 cards to come. 6 outs and he of course hits.
TT v A4s - People are getting their money in against me. No wonder as I'm running so bad. A flush draw on the board and I shove on a 9xx flop. He calls and then hits his flush.
AK v 34 - I connect on the flop but the short stack sticks around and hits his two pair on the river and doubles up.
AK v 22 - Allin preflop. He calls with 22 and I miss. Its getting brutal now.
AK v T7 - He calls a bet on a A87 flop. A ten lands on the turn and I lose another stack - tilt possibly?
Q8 v JJ - In position I c-bet with a flush draw. I hit my Queen and my flush draw is live so I shove. He calls and is thoroghly dominated but hits a 2 outer to double up.
KK v QQ - Allin preflop and he hits trips.
AK v 45 - He hits two pair on the river and despite checking takes down more of my leaking cash.

End result is $230 down and the most brutal session I have faced. After losing $180 I switched to the GBP6 tables. This means that my losses could have been a lot worse had I persevered at 50NL.

After looking back at my hands in hindsight I realised that most of my decision were sound as the majority of my money went in ahead.

My revisit to Interpoker has been a torment so far. After redepositing $200 I check my balance at the end and I'm down to $20 and just 40% of the way towards getting a $100 bonus.

I decide to call it a night and take the rest of the weekend off.

Trips requiem

The rest of the analysis from the Bet the Pot experts....

Phillberto said:
Thanks for the input. I did reraise to $5 - slightly over the min-raise and was called by the small blind. I thought I had the odds to call the BigBlind and see the logic in isolating him as I did. My concern is that my bet would ensure I would be looked up by the top of SB range ie TT or 99 and I would fold out weaker pairs that might be tempted to call the raise and see the flop. Any merits in this thinking or does the AQ possibility mean I have to raise and deny him seeing a flop? Alternatively is there any point in just shoving and increase the chance of getting him to fold his entire range.

reshoving would be my stnd play at these levels, cause while on btp the minraise is the #1 supertell and treated w/ respect out the butt, anyone playing NL10 doesnt have a clue.

I wouldn't expect SB to call a min 4-bet very often. If I thought that was at all likely I would just shove. You don't really want SB in the hand at all as 88 doesn't play well 3-ways with little or no money behind. You want to be all-in heads up against the BB who has a wide range. _________________Villain: Why? Villain: How? Me: I had a feeling Villian: Sit in you cretin

You are miles ahead of the shorty's range. If he's 35/25 in a squeeze position he could have Ax down to A9, any ace suited, just about any two paint as well as any pair. SB's range is probably about right (though at $10 positional awareness isn't usually that great so I wouldn't be too surprised to see him trying to take a flop with a suited connector or hand like AJs too). Reshove away (and sigh as donk has AA)

So it looks as if I should just have shoved.

Trips - are right fantastic

With Lamma Jim's bankroll diminishing I decided to go round and see if I could share any advice after having ground out a sizeable chunk of my own bankroll playing 10NL.

Obviously anyone offering poker advice in real games is setting themselves up for a fall. With poker tracker set up and an aborted attempt to set up Gametime+ stats display we got down to it. Some initial agression including firing a second bullet with a missed AK on a Qxx board ensured an initial up-turn and we were soon $2 to the good. Then this hand happened.

We raised with 88 from early position firing a 0.40c raise. A tight aggressive player in the small blind flat-called and the loose aggressive Big Blind pushed for 2.80. We were faced with the decision of having to call 2.40 for the prospect of winning 3.60 but with another tight player having to act behind us who had around 8.80 stack remaining.

The thinking was that we may be pretty much in line with the pushing range of the loose aggressive player and that pot odds weighted us towards a call. The tight player having not reraised I put on a pair - maybe 22-TT. We opted to reraise to $5 hoping the aggression would fold out the tight player and leave us to hopefully race with AK for pot which included some dead money. The tight player took a long time deciding and then opted to just call.

The flop was AQ8 giving us trips. The tight player then shoved leaving us an easy call. Turn brought a 9 and river a 7.

The tight player flipped over trip 9s to snatch the side-pot from us and then suprise suprise the loose aggressive player showed pocket Queens to take the main pot. Set over set over setted. Ouch. I calculate that is likely to happen once in every 1,600 times you flop a set. Oh well you lose to a set 1 in 40 times then why not get two out of the way in one fell swoop, eh.

Undaunted we bought back in for the max and settled down to replenishing Lucky Jim's bankroll. We managed to do that over the course of three big hands.

We raised AQs on the button and got a caller from the blinds. We hit the flush draw and gutshot straight draw against a calling station. He checked it too us and him being so passive and 'cally' we opted to just check behind on a KJx flop and try and hit one of our many outs. The turn didn't help but he checked it down again. Again we opted to check behind and see the river. The river diamond gave us the nuts and he checks it to us. We bet 3/4 pot and he then puts us allin. We debate whether to fist pump or call or call and then fist-pump and opt for the latter. He reveals his cunningly played pocket Kings for trips. Not only did he manage to give us every chance to draw out on him he decides to shove against us folding out pretty much every hand that he beats and ensuring a call from all hands that beat him. The exact opposite of what he should have done. Hurrah for us.

We take another decent pot against a middling short stack when we limp A3 from the big blind and catch. We bet out with our bottom pair and get our pot-sized bet called. A second 3 hits and we bet out again and get called. Shove on the river for 3.50 is surprisingly called and we take down a nice pot.

The third hand involved another medium stack. Another limped pot and we hit top and bottom pair on a very drawy flop. We bet pot and get a caller from a guy who had previously limped. He bets out for a $1 and we put him allin for his last $4. He calls and shows QQ and we take it down.

A $4 winning session despite the bad start that seems to be plagueing me at the moment. Not much of a dent in his losses but a reminder of how patient you have to be in grinding out results at 10NL.

Glad to see Deadly returns to form and begins erasing the losses as he dusts of the cobwebs from his great poker mind. *coughs*

Sklansky - you owe me.

Sklansky Bucks

I'm currently looking for a Lamma establishment that accepts Sklansky bucks having won a wad of them last night. Having wheeled home a new bed and shiny new flat-screen telly and HD-DVR recorder I was all set to get them up and running and forget poker for the night. I managed to plug in the Wii but both the Satellite and DVD player picture were poor and I couldn't manage to attach the laptop although did manage to hook up the Wii and old DVD player. Somewhat disgruntled I gave up and went to play some poker. Lady luck wasn't about to allow my frustration to be appeased either.

With 10GBP (fortunately the lower buy-in of my two tables) I found myself with Kings in the cut-off. I raise it to 40 shiny new pennies and the aggressive Big Blind 3-bets me to 1.20. I've been pondering the possibility of making overbets with big hands here recently. More often than not anyone with a big pair like mine would raise but with the hope of his opponent sticking around. I had a decent amount of stats on this guy and despite him being very aggro this 3 bet out of position was unusual I therefore expected a hand he didn't want to let go. I make my shove and he ponders then calls and I'm sure I'm ahead and probably a long way ahead. He has AK so I'm winning 7 times out of ten according to probability and according to Mr Sklansky I've now won 7 of your so called British pounds. This happened to be one of the other three times where the real money eluded me but my Sklansky cheque was still delivered on time. As Mrs P was sitting in the vicinity and watching the hand with a big smile on her face I dispensed a quick ranted accusation of disloyalty which was greeted with another hearty laugh. It was only later that she was smiling because she thought I had won!

I'd like to propose a new currency - The Todd Tilt $. The tt$ comes into effect once you run up a decent wad of Sklansky bucks but fail to realise this in real money terms. The Todd Tilt buck is then dished out to random opponents as one tries to push calling stations off of hands and decide that a rock might be bluffing. I managed to give away $10TT$ before the curtain closed and once again its looking like another break-even week.

Cold Turkey and Crystal Balls

Deadly returns from an extended enforced poker-free break with an itchy trigger finger. I predict an initial downturn for him as he proves just a little two eager to get involved in the action. Sure enough by 7am and just eight hands he has lost $20. A mere blip on his upward rise of course.

Bishot also has to contend with a snake rather than ladder in the game of bankroll building. He is felted 3 times in his session citing lack of concentration and limping out of position with marginal hands. He recovers though to end up just $25 down. I manage an hour of play and tread water for most of it before slow playing trips against a super aggro at 20NL and felting him when he pushed on the flop with a flush draw. I risked giving him a free card because I was sure he would bet. I wasn't expecting a push though but was happy to take his stack. I simultaneously got paid off on the other table when i hit two pair on the flop with QT in a limped pot. He called my raise and a second ten hit on the turn giving me a full house and a flush draw. I checked now putting him on a Queen. Another ten arrived giving me Quads as well as holding one of the queens. The pot was only 1.10 so I went for an overbet of 4.40 (GBP) and he paid me off, presumably with a Queen. $25 up for the night having lost a big pot on my first hand with a lost race against a medium stack when I got ended up with it all in with a flush draw and gutshot against top pair.

I plan to have a trip round to Lamma Jim's this week and see if I can help him beat the 10NL tables. Moocher has secured online gaming in Dubai so will be able to continue his quest to recovering his 2008 deficit.

Saturday night Live

Here is the cash flow figures from Saturday's live game.

Bigshot +888
Spicer +382
Phillberto +230
Sham - 200
The Don -200
Lamma Jim -500
Pete - 600

The live action returned to Sham's roof and a chilled out vibe with moody lighting, an ice bucket and new table all adding to the ambience. It started off half an hour late though and just 4 handed with myself Sham, Spicer and Don. Don had to leave to take care of a visiting guest but Jim arrived to take his place, armed with snacks aplenty, with Pete and Bigshot arriving shortly after. Don's return took the numbers up to seven and proved a decent number.

There was plenty of action to be had with some big pots getting shown down with some middling hands. One hand saw a Queen arrive on the river of a JXX flop that had a possible flush and one card to a straight. Don pushed when the Queen hit and saw a reluctant call from Pete. Both showed a Jack but it was Don's Ace Kicker against Pete's King and Pete was forced to buy back in.

Don continued to prove a catalyst for action putting in some big overbets on occasion and very often getting called down. He made a move and then showed a bluff and I then managed to escape on a paired board when he made the same move again on a paired board. This time with the goods.

This session also saw some 3 betting - a bit of a novelty for this game. I kicked off with an out of position against a Bigshot button raise and got a fold and Bigshot repaid the favour with me forcing me to fold AQo out of position reluctantly. Jim wasn't to be scared off by such a play though and he called down seemingly reluctantly on a KXX flop with his pocket 8's to lose to Bigshots pocket rockets. The previous hand he had taken down with Pocket cowboys so he certainly seemed to be picking up his share of premium pairs.

I took down a few pots uncontested early on but then made a poor play with K5. I decided to see a flop from the small blind and a KQx flop saw me bet out pot and get called down by Don. After getting called down I decided to slow down and checked the turn with Don betting $12 into me. Too small a bet to fold I carried on. Another seeming blank on the river and I threw out a small blocking bet of $12 which was called down by Don whose K with ten kicker was good enough. A timely reminder of the perils of playing weak hands out of position.

Spicer and I clashed for the first time beyond the flop. I limped UTG and the flop was Kx3 with two diamonds. I bet out near pot bet of $30 and only Spicer called. A Queen of diamonds came on the turn completing the flush draw and I led out with a second bullet of 3/4 pot. Spicer again called and the river brought a second three. I fired for $110 and Spicer mucked. I'm still trying to work out what the man had. I'm guessing a King of diamonds with a medium kicker like a Jack or ten.

Bigshot was the man with the monster stack though as he didn't seem to lose a hand. His aggression was good and every time at Showdown he showed down the best hand.

Spicer for once had to play with a short stack and as a result he seemed to switch gears a little by tightening up and waiting for a hand. I arrived in the nick of time (with him $40 down) - the final hand- as is becoming traditional a gambling hand for those looking to reverse their fortunes for the night. His Cowboys were by far the best hand on a Qxx flop and they held up without anyone even showing down a Queen against them in a 3 way allin.

Sham didn't seem to catch any big hands and let a buyin leak away as he speculatively called a lot of raises hoping to strike lukcy. He remains a winner though and as ever was a gracious host.

So the 2008 tallies are as follows....

Yearly totals (HK$)
Spicer +846
Bigshot +688
Phillberto +336
Deadly +160
Sham +54
Pete -366
The Don -500
Moocher -600

It looks likely that Deadly could enjoy another couple of weeks in Blighty and still be leading the way in bankroll building. I slide for most of the week but manage to win it back in a late night Friday night session which coupled with the Saturday live game ensures I 'm banned from seeing any more action on Sunday.
Bigshot shows the biggest gains despite sliding $110 from his high water mark earlier in the week. He is starting to show some consistancy at 50NL after dabbling in 100NL. Could it be a three horse race this year. Could Moocher prove to be a dark horse and hit a winning streak? A little run of form and he might well pull himself back into the black for the year. Lamma Jim brings up the rear -phnaar phnaar and gets no respite at the Live game either.

Live Poker - Buffalo Soldiers gather

Sham volunteers his roof replete with new tables as the second game of the year is spontaneously planned on the street.

No online poker for me with Cupid keeping me from the poker room armed with a high velocity projectile device. A slight miscalculation from previous nights means I'm now down on the week and need a spectacular weekend to get back on track.

I've decided that Poker Ace HUD is my new friend and a vital tool to online success. I'll expand more later with details of the stats I'll include on players.

Happy Valentine Day Y'all

Moocher reloads for $100 and gets back up on that horse. In no time he is galloping freely along on the tournament circuit and recuperates over half of his losses for the year in one sitting. Bigshot continues his recovery from down as low as $332 to continue his climb with another $90 win.

Poor ol' Phillberto couldn't get the PC to boot up so ended up playing the ultra loose and aggressive 50NL games at Poker4Ever. First round but with only $40 on the table I raise A8 suited on the button and get called by both blinds. Board comes 889 with two spades showing. The small blind with just a pot sized bet left pushes. I flat call hoping to get the Big Blind to come along (and hoping I've not just priced him in for a flush draw). He shoves which makes my life easier and I call. He flips over K9 clubs but then hits runner runner club to draw out on me. Once again I'm off to an awful start. I reload to $50 and play simulataneously with $100 behind on a 50NL table action table. A limper, 2.25 raise from a loose raiser, flat call, flat call. I'm in the Big Blind with AJs and decide to try and squeeze for $16. I get a caller though and he shoves on a KQx board.

Shortly after I have AJs on the button. I hit my Jack and with a flush draw but on co-ordinated flop. I pot it and get a caller. The turn blanks and I fire a 3/4 pot 2nd bullet. He calls and I hope to hit my flush. An Ace hits and I push - he calls and I take it down - I suspect with a weaker two pair. It's a big pot but I get raised off a lot of hands and end up giving $25 back meaning a small net increase of $8.

I fire up four tables on Interpoker later and hit a run of bad luck. I'm trailing a little after a period of being card dead. A short stack is starting to push allin on a regular basis. In the Big Blind I decide to call with 88 and his AQ wins the race. I then decide to limp with TT thinking there is a good chance he will push again but he folds and I end up in a three way pot ATx with two spades. I pot it and get a caller. I bet 3/4 pot and he calls and a King hits on the river. I bet GBP3.50 into GBP 5 pot and he shoves. Its either AK or the flush draw hit on the turn. I suspect its the flush draw as AK would have been more likely to raise preflop so I let it go reluctantly. I've then unclicked 'autopost Blinds' and raise in a multi-limped pot with KT. I hit my ten and pot it. I get a caller and a third spade lands. I bet again and get called. A King on the river and he bets out. He has a pot sized bet left so I stick him allin. He had the nut flush though and I manage to lose on all four tables for a $28 deficit and my Interpoker record takes a further nose dive into negative territory.

Lamma Jim also checks in with a depleted bank roll to counter-balance the gains of Moocher and Bigshot.

Mixed news

Bigshot reports in this morning with a $110 win at 50NL and seems upbeat about his new playing style. I after an enforced poker break sit in at three tables and hit a set on my first hand with pocket sevens on a A76 board. An 8 on the turn and then Barry Greensteins favourite, an Ace on the River. If I was behind to a jammy straight I've just outdrawn them and get the last of my money in on the river and get called. AK? No. TK for a straight? No. Pocket 8's and I'm outsetted after he called a near pot sized raise with two overpairs. Despite playing for a while and winning on the other two tables I end up down.

Getting oversetted happens though and I managed to take it in my stride without it affecting my play too much. Moocher reports in finally for the week and its grim news for him as reports he is busted. Its only $60 down for the year so easily recoverable but none the less probably a blow to his confidence. We await his update for plans on his online poker career and any adjustments he plans to make.

I resolve my Pacific Poker bonus query. It seems they paid 1/3 of my bonus up-front for some reason which I kind of noticed at the time. It means that I now have a lot of poker to play before I get any more Bonus $$$ at Interpoker and I'm already down $37 there. Winning poker seems to be eluding me at the moment but after a review of my main losses last night I only found a couple of hands that I felt I didn't play well.

Maybe Valentine's night will be lucky for me :-)

Ultimate Bet

I finally manage to wrestle the $50 worth of tournament $$ out of UB. After winning my first $5+0.50 tournament before realising I didn't have my T$ I started well. I then bought into a tournament using cash rather than T$. I managed to place third in a $10 tourney after losing a race with TT against AJ. My t$ were then depleted by a number of bubble losses before I won a $10 for a $50 win which let me cash out with $84 to the good. Another $20 win at lunchtime and I need to clear another bonus of $100 at Interpoker whilst winning $189 in the process.

A tough ask.

Lamma Jim turns the corner, does a three point turn and then takes the wrong exit at the roundabout but still manages to head in the right direction. I get subjected to a poker ban and domestic strife that limits my opportunity to catch Deadly who has been jogging on the spot for two weeks. Bigshot visits the playground and decides to have a go on the swings. The week ends on an upswing and he gets his nose back in the black. I await figures from Moocher although a delay is never a good sign!
I've been struggling to get Ladbrokes and Pacific Poker to live up to their bonus promise. I manage to squeeze $10 out of a Ladbrokes Blackjack bonus (Whoopie-Doo!) and for some unknown reason Pacific Poker decide to only pay 2/3rds of my bonus. I'm currently slightly down on Interpoker and having to readjuct after the super-loose Pacific play but remain shy of my targets. Ho Hum.

Late news in from Moocher. His silence was a result of bad news...busto.

Plodding on

Lamma Jim looks out a starting hand chart and finishes up his session $12 up. Could this be the turn around? As a man that likes his metal I'm sure he is keen to get back in black. I find myself last night on a pretty straightforward table and am close to a buy in up at 50NL before a software glitch closes the table. I can only find a seat at 50NL against a guy with $10. I flop two pair on the first hand and felt him but I give back $5 and we are evenly matched at $15. I raise, get min raised and push with pocket eights and he calls with Kings which hold reducing my win for the night to $36.

I then let Mrs P loose on Ladbrokes blackjack to win a $25 bonus. Half-way through the requirements she is running $9 down so not likely to help the roll much at all but good for a giggle.

With my floor needing to be ripped up it may be prudent to relocate the family for a week after Chinese New Year. This may free up a little more poker time and may enable me to get back on track for the first Quarter.

Quarter 1 - Target assessment

January Target: +$300 January Actual +355
February Target: +$500
March Target: +$450

As I was anticipating a $200 bonus being cleared in February my predictions are a bit inaccurate and in real terms I'm actually behind in terms of where I want to be. I 'll be working on clearing the following Bonus in February (Ultimate Bet $50, Pacific Poker $100 - already 75% completed- and Interpoker $100). Earned as follows:
Week 6 (11/2)- $100 Bonus
Week 7 (18/2)- $50 Bonus
Week 10 (3/3) - $100 Bonus
Week 13 (31/3) - $100 Bonus

Which means I'll need to run at winning $6.68 an hour on the tables so around 5 PTBB/100 if I play 80 hands an hour. If I can 2 table and still maintain the win-rate that would make life easier.

I have a terrible start to my weekend play. I hit top pair three times and get called by the same player three times. Each time he reraises me big on the river. I fold the first two times and then decided I'm getting pushed around and call and lose to a rivered two pair. Ouch. $30 down and onto a $50 table that is playing huge pots regularly. I have pocket Aces on my first hand. Three limpers to me so I pop it up to $3 and get called twice. The flop comes down 345 and the first raiser goes allin and the second calls. I click call far too quickly and before I even see their cards realise I have made a stupid call. Both have the nuts 56o and I lose my buy-in. I takes a long session to claw it back.

I really need to cut out stupid plays.

I also had two ridiculous hands. Full stacks at 50Nl .
I raise to $2 pre-flop with JJ and get repopped to $6.
I call.
Flop comes AJx rainbow and he checks. I bet $9 and he repops me to $18.

I'm getting my money in and trying to put him on a hand before deciding to push here or flat call.

I think his range is pretty narrow.
AA is least likely but in that case I'm screwed.
AK is very likely.
KK or QQ are also possibilities and he is hoping to fold out and lesser pairs or hope I call and check it down.
I think AK will call a push as will AA of course. So I'm weighing up calling and risking giving $2 outs twice for the sake of an outside chance of getting another bet out of them on the river.

I decide that the better play is the push. Except I've clicked on speed table by mistake and I'm timed out a fraction of a second before I get it allin. This is when I'm $80 down so my hole just got $12 deeper and that was such a great spot and I could have climbed out there.

I try and persuade myself that maybe I have just made a great laydown to Aces!

10 minutes later with the young jeepster M. running around I'm in a limped pot in the Big Blind. I have A7s and the nut flush draw in a three way pot. I check, UTG bets just over half pot and is called by cut-off. I now have the pot odds to call. The turn is unlikely to help anyone and once again UTG fires a half pot-sized bet (2.50). Again the cut-off calls and I'm priced in. The river blanks and I check and the UTG fires for $3 more and the cut-off gives up.

The little person then decides to pay me a visit - looks at the screen and has made a crazy toddler read and hits the call button on the laptop. He flips over a missed straight draw and I rake in a $16 pot.

Ace high was good and we may have a protegee in the making capable of such immense hero calls. 'Bob the Builder' he says. Was he simply hoping that I would visit the Bob the Builder website or was he in fact referring to the fact he was helping me 'build' my bankroll. You decide.

January Summary

January Summary

Deadly +801
Phillberto + 355
BigshotBog +35
Moocher +10
Lamma Jim -60

As January comes to an end we have a first look at the net effects of the month. Deadly has great month and notches up his biggest winning month to date. Phillberto recovers from a poor start to show an average winning month but mainly made up of bonus. Bigshot loses earlier bigger gains but still manages a winning month. Moocher also went ahead early but has watched the initial gain being whittled down to close to his starting figure and poor Jim shows up as the only losing player as he battles with 10NL.
