Untold Secrets of Poker

So after Moocher's tales of the demon hand reader (still waiting on the hand history Moocher) I've carried out some internet investigating.

Found this on youtube which purports to be showing real time info on your opponents hole cards.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AXFCsQtPBE

It links to a site where whatever they are selling costs US$29.99 and I have to admit I'm a little curious.

I've found a 'review' of it on the net which seems to be a sales pitch but indicates you are getting a 100 page document. Not sure how a document is going to enable you to see hole cards. If it is possible then you surely need software.

My normal presumption here would be that this a scam. Once they take the money off you they could send you 'how to play winning poker' type book. You can hardly go to the internet police can you? Even if you could I don't think the line of I was trying to buy software that allowed me to steal money would go down to well with the local constabulary.

However given how recently the video (June 8th) was put online I'm not writing it off as a definite scam just yet.

While I'm sure doing this is very, very difficult I'm sure it is theoretically possible. I guess it has to be one of two possible routes a) some form of hacking and I can't see Joe Bloggs being able to download some software and achieve this although that seems to be what they are suggesting can be done. b) They have some kind of malsoftware or virus on people's computers that is sending real-time information on their hole-cards.

If by buying and installing the software on your computer you are actually the one who is then sending out info on your own hole cards that would be an interesting twist. Cheating the cheaters as it were.

The other major issue that Deadly raised and that I agree with is that why if you had the ability to do this would you market it on the internet and if you had this ability would you be showing of in a low stakes sit n go. Very good point but I think I can piece together a situation where this might just happen.

If you are computer whizz kid and capable of doing this then you can make shot loads of money. However you are breaking the law. It would be theft pure and simple and jail time could be pretty hefty. There would be some big time lobbying from the many corporate giants that control online gaming to put you away for a very long time. You would be made an example of.
Might it not be easier to charge US$30 a time where you don't have to break the law. If it works I think you would be looking atrealistically making hundreds of thousands from this.

So the person at Moochers table. He hears from a friend about it and tries it for himself and flaunts it. Maybe not someone that even plays poker or plays low stakes sit n gos. You would try it out on the game you normally play. A bit stupid to flaunt it of course but not an impossibility.

Moocher's complaints to support went unresponded to. I'll have a look at the hand history before trying to draw any more conclusions. Hopefully it includes the table chat.

Anything in it? Moocher I presume you are convinced already its for real.

Final Table

Picture the scene. On the final table - glory in sight. Hours of patient play has been rewarded with a big stack of chips. The clock approaches 11.20pm and with blinds increasing fast but still not critical you face an allin. You look down at your cards and see 44.

You consider all the factors. 44 against any essentially any two cards is a race. Against almost any pair you are drawing to two outs. More importantly factor in the fact that the ferry leaves at 11.30pm. Factor in the fact that you've been drinking all night to the extent that you you've forgotten that a 12.30pm ferry exists. Factor in your name is Moocher and you always go allin with a low pair.

Take into account all these factors, dear reader, and you have an easy call. Now factor in you are up against AA.

The good news......

You catch your ferry.

Nonetheless Moocher makes the final table and a highly creditable 5th position as he attended Drop on the chance that a spot was available and his speculation is rewarded.

Nice one , sir.

As for me. I decided a Malibu and Pineapple would be nice follow up to a tequila shot. Does that sound like the thought process of a sober man.

The End of Online Poker.

Enough of this optimism and anticipated bankroll increases. Time for moaning, tales of bad beats and allegations of cheating.

Not able to give poker my undivided attention I spark up a $6 tourney while chatting to the Moll and her friend. 5 left and I get all in with two pairs and get called by middle pair. He hits runner runner flush. Bah.

Decide to switch to 10NL cash game as I chat away.

I call an allin for $6 with QQ and lose to A10.

I reraise with KK preflop. Flop 332 (2 hearts). I bet out get min raised. Reraise for all but $2. He calls. Flop 8 spades and I push. He calls and flips over 88.

In the big blind I call with 92 and flop comes A 9 2 rainbow. I check-raise a short stack and get allin on the turn. 10 hits on the river and he shows 9 10.

Running bad I make this play.

AKs in the small blind facing a raise of .40c. I reraise to 1.20. Which is called.
Flop comes KJ8 (two hearts). I bet $1.90 and get reraised to 3.50 with $5 behind.
I push and he shows JJ. Could I find a fold there? He was tight aggressive.
Could have been AA, KK, QQ trying to find out if he was good, JJ, 88, AK.
Can't see him making the play with much else. Bah.
-$20 down on the night.

So I lose a few dollars and declare the end of online poker. A bit drastic not.

No I also bring tales of online fraud. Not due to any of the above. I'd happily play against all of those opponents (well maybe not the last guy) any day.

Many tales of internet cheating are friends of friends (of friends?).

This is none other than our very own Moocher666. Playing in a US$10+1 SnG last night and holding AQ he raises and sees a flop of Q92 rainbow.
His opponent types in the chat box. "Your AQ is no good" before any action.
Thinking this is speech play he continues and gets to a showdown with his opponent showing two pairs.
A little later he declares to another opponent "your pocket 8's are no good". When betting continues he mucks but shows the rest of the table that he does indeed hold 88.
This happens no less than 5 times before Moocher departs the tourney. Each time with him correctly stating the opponents hole cards. No incorrect guesses were made either.

This caused uproar at the table and chat was continued into the lobby with support being contacted. A number of regulars were highly suspicious of recent activity and a potential exodus is threatened.

I'll ask Moocher to get the tournament hand history as this is already second hand information and even first hand info is potentially flawed. None the less this is the first instance I've heard of that is believable.

So a tabloid headline above or a possibility - what say you?

Splashing about at Party

After completing Golden Riviera bonus I had to decide where the bonus trail would take me next. First site to appear on the radar was William Hill which seems to be the best bonus available now. They pay you £5 per hour to play for the first 5 hours you play a month. Plus an additional first deposit bonus which works out at £/$11.50 an hour. I had a few dilemmas that I wanted to mull over though.
1) Should I play in £ or US$. My preference is $ as I won't have to worry about conversion fees. Also £100nl is a bit scary! However a lot of players seem to regret giving up what is essentially double the bonus.
2) Am I ready for 100nl. My results at 50nl though a very small sample would indicate I can be confident making the step up with a safety net of 5BB/hour. However I'm a bit short of 20 buy-ins. If I wait until I hit $2100 that would psychologically be a good place to start.
3) Do I want to miss out on $50 because I'm chicken?
I'll mull it over today and try and come with a new site that can hopefully take me over the 2k line.
Action last night. I piss about on party and end up losing playing full ring 10nl three tabling. After 6 maxing its hard to adjust as I call down an overbet on the river after checking kk on the turn. Lost to trip 8s. Guess he was going for the check raise on the turn, bah. Decide to play a sng instead for a bit more action. Out on the bubble a couple of times. I try a 3$ step tourney and crash out. I then try an $11 sng and end up at 4 handed raising allin on the button with kqs. Get called by j4o! 4 hits and I'm out on the bubble. My party stack has diminished by $35 now and I try one more $11 sng. Down to 4 handed again and its a real strategic battle. Big stack is stealing from middle stacks. 2nd stack from 3rd stack. Little stack is playing aggressive until he overtakes someone and the pressure is then placed on him.
I hovered on the short stack three times and each time raised by way out of trouble. Three times the short stack was called and won a race leaving both the big stack and small stacks as the new medium stacks and creating a new small stack and big stack.
Eventually after 30mins two similar sized stacks get in a race and we are down to three and in the money. I take out the small stack and we are down to two. The guy remaining has become super aggressive for the past 20 mins and has being getting away with it. He raises to 2,400 on the first heads-up hand with Blinds of 800. I have k2 suited but think he will fold so put him allin. He thinks for an age and calls with A3.
A 2 on the flop and another 2 on the turn mean I get lucky and win $50 making amends for all the previous bubbling and dumb calling. The most positive news was the guy to go out on the bubble was called Celticfc1967. Get it up you ya potato eating unwashed beggar!

Golden Riviera -Final Summary

So here is the final rundown on how my short stay in the Riviera went.

10NL - 93.75BB/100 (16 hands) Played to get aquanted with the software.
20Nl - 24.70BB/100 (159 hands)
50NL - 10.96BB/100 (625 hands)

Pretty solid stats. Je ne regrette rien but time to say Au revoir.

I also found the alias function that allows you to pull different accounts together for one Poker tracker reading. I only started playing on the PC round about the time of the blog start and have dabbled with the laptop and work PC during that time.

Stats are

+$255.34 BB11.50/100 (3,658 hands).

What I take from that.
- A decent win-rate that I am happy with.
- A reminder just how much of my winnings come from bonii.
- Single tabling I'm really not playing very many hands. Have to play three times as may hands before my stats become meaningful at all according to the many internet gurus out there.

255.34 BB11.50 (3,658 hands)

Au revoir Golden Riviera

Monday night action and some hand histories for your perusal and comment.I've left the stack sizes in so don't jump ahead! I step down to 20NL as I fell I may be a bit rusty after such a long period of inaction. I completely forget that I have to play 50NL to be eligible for the bonus but support fail to pick up on this so its all good. Comments welcomed. Bet, raise, call or fold and suggested bet sizes. Bonus points for putting the villain on a hand...

Royal Flush

Worth a post in itself this one. Deadly has the first recorded Royal straight flush in lamma history. Unfortunately it wasn't in a Bond film so the board wasn't paired with the villain holding Aces over Kings so his pot was quite meagre.

Give us the details then Deadly. Did you get over-excited and overbet, folding everyone or did you play it canny and squeeze a dollar or two out of your opponent and get to show it?

It comes around every 650,000 hands so assuming 65 hands an hour with you managing an average of ten hours a week then round about twenty years from now I'd bump up the stakes and make sure you are playing deep. I just wish I could use a Royal flush as an alarm clock for work!

Yawn! is that really twenty years passed already- see you tonight honey.

It's that time of week...

1) Deadly $1870 (+169)(+104) (+118)(-59)(+447) (-36) (+35) (+101) (-110) (+257) (+134) (+6) (+117)
2) Phillberto $1302 (-12) (+87) (+243) (+41) (+12) (+231)(+76)(+90) (+50) (+106) (+23) (+133) (+306)
3) Moocher666 $401 (-6) (-38) (-35) (-38) (-27) (-105) (no change)(+78) (+4) *
4) Bigshotbog $224 (no change)(nc)(-6) (nc)(-40) (nc)(nc) (nc) (-150)(nc) (+10) (-264)
*Moocher owes Phillberto$475

Deadly gets very close to the 2K finishing line but a late burst in the wrong direction delays his goal. Still a solid week none the less. Failing technology mean I fail to put in the hours and Moocher fails to land the big one he was hoping for. Bigshot presumably will rejoin the action once he goes wireless.
And we may have a new addition to the blog as the Moll asks to be set up with a bankroll. Back seat drivers aren't any fun so I'll leave her to learn her lessons the hard way and only offer post session feedback.

PCCFW

Yeah my chums at PCCW decide to cut me off just as they close for the weekend. With my pc now repaired and back it was a little frustrating to find my internet connection was down again. Hopefully I can get it back up and running for tonight and get some poker in. Its been too long. I've only played two Sit n Go's all week and lost them both so its my first losing week since records began.

As you may have guessed from the Bankrolls Moocher's hopes for the big win end up in tatters as he loses out to a number of bad beats. His exit from the WPT event must have hurt.

28 remaining.

Blinds at 75/150

Moocher has stack of c 6000

2 limpers and the small blind completes.

He looks down to Aks in the BB with 2 limps and the small blind completing.

He opts to just call.

Flop: Jd 9d 7d

He holds the nuts. He is not only put allin but has another caller before him. He calls and he is up against trip 9's and an inside straight draw for a straight flush.

The river completes the straight draw and he plummets out.

I make it 20 outs against him so I guess it won't be the worst bad beat in history although he did lose to the guy with one out which must smart a bit.

and the winner is...

Just went to the wrong floor on the way to the doctor's and bumped into Mr Solid from my table. Seems he finished second. The winner was Mr Cool it seems who also seems to be the mouth Australian. I had him down as American as did Mr Solid but the Moll insists he is Australian and just has lived in US for a while. Apparently Mr Cocksure and Mr Cool are buddies though and the Moll seems to think he is a pro. Man I got to learn some chip tricks soon and get working on my table talk!

That's about it.

Live from Drop

The moll and I hand over little phillbertito to the helper and head off for some texas holdem action. I'd called the venue Drop earlier and told they were already full but we were welcome to come down and see if a place materialised ,which fortunately it did.

The moll ended up on table 'a' and I played at table 'c'. 4 tables in total.
Blinds started at 1/2 and stack sizes at 300. I predictably fold my first dozen hands and watch the table. I notice a donkey straight off two to my left. Three to my left the guy seems solid, the chinese guy next to him seems to make over-emphatic bets(mr overbet). To his left the only girl at the table seems solid(Ms Solid). To her left we have an american (mr us) who seems tightish and another donkey to my right.
All flops are being seen and bet sizes are wishy washy not chasing away draws.
Blinds up to 2/4 before I play my first hand.
Its folded round to the lady who raises to 16 small blind folds. I call with 10 10.
Its a dry flop 9xx.
I raise 25 and she calls.
Another low card hits and I check. She checks behind.
I value bet to 20$ on the river putting her on a medium pair or ak.
She calls and mucks.
Mr overbet ends up getting called by mr us when mr overbet shoves with just 33 but Mr US had limped with jj and called the allin. He doesn’t hit a 3 and and his stack drops below $100.
He goes all in several times again over the next rounds uncalled.
I raise from cutoff with 99 and he puts me allin from the BB.
I call, He shows kj and I win the race.
With blinds 5/10 I begin stealing pots in position.
Twice I take it down uncontested and twice a c-bet is required but I've still not lost a pot.
I'm now the big stack and being shown the respect I deserve!
Two donkeys get stacked then Mr us gets allin in a blind battle with Miss Solid.
His 22 loses to her j8s! 'How can you call with J8s' he said.
'How can you reraise allin with 22!' she quips.
Now one major donkey remaining who has a decent stack despite some horrible calls.
Blinds now 10/20.
And we have two people added to the table. Lady #2 who joins us is very short and when its folded to me I raise to $80 from the cutoff with 22. She calls a bet of 80.
Flop comes 448. She goes allin for her last 68.
I call and she turns over j4. Ouch.
My stack takes its first dent.
Now with blinds at 50/100 the donkey limps utg.
The decent player calls too and its folded to me in the small blind.
With 99 and out of position I reckon I am best here and out of position I'm happy to take it down a 350$ pot.
With around $800 left I go allin and get called by the donkey with k 10.
10 on the turn and I lose a huge pot and I'm wounded badly.
Down to $120 with just more than one BB and just three hands to see before I'm blinded out I go allin utg with k3. Big blind calls adding in a mere 20 more and his a5 holds up to send me crashing out. Finished 13th I believe.

The moll seemed to win over a few fans with her playing. Lots of table talk at her table. One tiny american that well call 'cocksure' who could pull off a nice riffle and a mouthy australian to boot who had her clocked 'as the most dangerous player at the table'
The moll plays tight and watches most people who seem to be happy playing any two. She has felted two people already including trip 5s taking out a pair of 9s. Cocksure is bossing the table though and is the big stack. She checks in the big blind with a5o. 25/50 blinds with utg+1 and cocksure in cutoff both calling.
Flop : ac 2c3s
Pot: 150 and she leads 75. Utg+1 folds and cocksure minraises to 150. She minreraises straight back to 300 to see if she is good. He calls.
Flop: 4 spades
The moll hits her straight and pushes cocksure takes a long time to decide, calculating pot odds and trying to put her on a hand.
He decides, says he puts her on two pair and calls.
She can't quite recall how much she had behind her. Maybe another $500 into a $900 pot so it must have been a close call for him.
He shows ac8c.
Giving him just 9 outs and the moll a great chance to become outright chip leader. A 7c comes on the river filling his flush and the moll's first poker tourney comes to an abrupt halt.
But she loved every minute of it comparing all the players to famous pros which they loved. A free vodka minature for all and a free drink for anyone staying to the last hand. Not sure what the prizes were but it was professionally run and a good atmosphere.
The moll and I are back next week for revenge!
We left to catch the ferry as the last table was formed and we witness some controversy as we leave.
I missed the preflop action but first to act had betted $500 into a 643 flop with a juicy pot already created and had been called by Mr Cool who has position.
The dealer Mr Cocksure screws up and thinks they are both allin and burns and turns the turn and river. When the error of his ways are pointed out a solution has to be found. The solution is that both the turn and river are placed back in the pack, its reshuffled and a new turn card is dealt. This time it’s a King. Mr French seems pained by the new card but eventually pushes. Mr Cool calls and its showdown time. Mr French flips KJ - nice act! He hit on the turn the second time around. Mr Cool shows QQ! And he has just lost to one of three outs when the river doesn't help him.
I reckon that the turn should have remained and that only the river should have gone back into the pack to be reshuffled.
Good fun all round and drinks weren't that overpriced at $32 a bottle with free grub. I'll post details later for next week as it seems you have to sign up to get a slot. Its been running for 10 weeks now and there are a number of regulars.

Meanwhille Deadly plays for real money and rakes up another $40 quick smart. Seems like he might be enjoying a 2K celebratory tipple this weekend.

Live a little

So the prospect of another Live game is put on the agenda. 2nd July is a holiday it seems making a Sunday or Monday night game a possibility. Similar format, similar faces, different result is what I am looking for.
Bigshot mentions the prospect of burgers and hot-dogs to boot. Whose in?
I'm also planning to head down to Drop tonight to check out their internet holdem night with the Moll if anyone fancies.

Not my night - Did deadly cross the 2K line?

Will Moocher enjoy WPT glory before he busts out? Will Deadly put poker second to football for a night? Will I ever get an internet computer working again?

PCCFW cut me off last night. When I asked why they told me because I didn't pay my bill. I then asked how I paid my bill and they repeated simply that I hadn't paid my bill. I then had to spell out that I paid using auto-pay from my credit card therefore they hadn't paid my bill. "The next payment is not scheduled until July the 1st, sir". Really and who schedules it. They put me back on but I felt I wasn't in the perfect frame of mind for playing so played a US$6 Sit n Go. I was disconnected as a loose connection added to my technical woes. Ended up with 1,500 left and was folded to in the small blind with blinds of 100/200. I raised to 600 instead of pushing and was reraised allin. I realised I was pretty much obliged to call and saw A6 which held up. I also played another hand badly where I raised OTB with QJs got two callers. Q shows on a mono-flop. I bet 400 and get check raised allin for another 1200 and call. Lose to a made flush. In retrospect the check raise has to be a minimum of a queen and I perhaps should have folded.

Second game I am disconnected three times with my dodgy connection. Reach the last five and once again its folded to me in the small blind. I make the same mistake again and instead of pushing raise to 650. When I'm reraised allin I'm committed. My A10 is dominated by AJ and out I go.

Need to get my arse along to Wanchai computer centre pronto. I have a Deadly to catch.

Bigshotbog awaits wireless connection in order to resume his online poker career and return to the fold.

Moocher's Quest for Glory

Moocher's dwinding account does mask some positive news for him this week it seems.

As a new player at Poker-room he qualified for Super Sunday $2500 guaranteed. Limited to new players he has the opportunity to recoup some funds there although a field of perhaps 600 may make that difficult.

With even bigger rewards at stake he also holds an entry ticket (worth $100) for stage 4 of the chance for King of the Hill glory. Stage 7 final table play for a $3000 final winner prize A long way to go yet though and no doubt a sharp gradient in play as he tries to progress.

And last but most certainly not least he holds a level 4 WPT entry ticket (worth $650 + $50) after graduating from a $50 + $4 satellite.

This certainly takes him into contention for the highest stakes game attempted by lamma players although Deadly could contest this with some of his dabbles into high stakes cash action.

We look forward to his next update.

Belated Bankrolls

Ok. My trip to Singapore meant that this a little behind schedule this week. I'll complete the summary of the live game soon and have some tales from Moocher which are ongoing in his quest for amongst other things a seat at the WPT finals.

1) Deadly $1701 (+104) (+118)(-59)(+447) (-36) (+35) (+101) (-110) (+257) (+134) (+6) (+117)
2) Phillberto $1314 (+87) (+243) (+41) (+12) (+231)(+76)(+90) (+50) (+106) (+23) (+133) (+306)
3) Moocher666 $407 (-38) (-35) (-38) (-27) (-105) (no change)(+78) (+4) *
4) Bigshotbog $224 (no change)(-6) (no change)(-40) (no change)(nc) (nc) (-150)(nc) (+10) (-264)

Live from Casa Bigshot

So another Live game comes to pass and quite a success it proves. A few beers, plenty of action and a reasonable number of hands per hour with genial company to make amends for only having one table on the go.

The end results;

Bigshotbog: The nights biggest winner +HK$670
Sham: +HK$140
Pete: +HK$60
Moocher: -HK$20
Phillberto: -HK$180
Chris:-HK$200
Deadly: -HK$420

Figures don't quite work out but are close enough.

First hand of note Deadly raised up from the button. Moocher after limping calls the raise and its a two way pot.
Flop: J53 rainbow
Moocher bets half pot and Deadly responds with raising it up.
the turn doesn't appear to help amd Moocher comes out firing again. Deadly opts for a call this time.
River is checked down.
Moocher KJ loses to top pair top kicker as Deadly draws first blood.

The action hots up soon after when a three way limped pot between Deadly, Bigshot and Sham.
Action flop of KJ10 with two hearts shows up.
Action flop it is and when all three get allin we are expecting some pretty good hands to be shown.
Deadly's shows K 10 and begins to realise he might just be beat. Moocher and Bigshot both show AQ for the nuts and the turn and river prove meaningless.
Split pot but Deadly is forced to make an early buy in.

I think I'm missing a few feltings here so feel free to fill in the gaps and I'll edit later.
Bigshot and Moocher I believe.

Bigshot and Moocher clash again and this time they both have pretty sizeable stacks in front of them.

Flop: A 6 3 seems to inspire a lot of action.
Deadly makes the early running with a raise on the flop.
He raises to HK$100 on the turn when a card 4 falls on the turn. Deadly faces a reraise for another HK$100 which he calls.
River doesn't seem to alter anything and Bigshot pushes. Deadly calls.
Bigshot show 45 for the straight.
Deadly mucks his trip 6's.
Tough to find a fold with that hand but maybe against Bigshot he could just have found one.

Deadly has to rebuy and the money on the table continues to grow.

His stack has already been dwindled down when Pete arrives late to join the action. He sees Phillberto's first tussle of the evening.
Deadly raised from the button.
Phillberto calls from the button and Chris who had limped in from early position opts to call.
Flop: 563 with two hearts
doesnt seem like an action flop but its good enough for deadly to push.
Phillberto ponders and calls.
Chris also calls and a Jack on the turn seems harmless.
Phillberto pushes and Chris ponders for a moment calling without too much confidence it seems.
Deadly shows KK
Philberto shows 55 giving him trip 5's and Chris shows a 4 for an open ended straight draw.
Two outs for deadly and eight for Chris.
River is a two and Chris takes down a pot in the region of HK$600.

The very next hand Phillberto raises on the button with a pitifully reduced stack. Bigshot maybe sensing tilt calls.
Flop: 10 8 4
Phillberto prices a bet and then decides that he will bhe pot committed with any bet so pushes.
Bigshot calls, shows AQ
Phillberto shows 107 and is 75% favourite.
Once again the river hits . This time its a Queen and Bigshot despite his prvious buy-ins is sitting pretty with a big stack including the newly introduced black chips.

Phillberto buys back in and Pete joins a table with a lot of action going on.

Next big hand sees Deadly and Moocher lock horns.

The pot builds up pretty quickly and with K Q 10 9 4 (rainbow)showing on the board Deadly puts in a big raise to HK$100.
Moocher not only calls but puts him allin.
With most of his stack already committed deadly is put in a tough spot.
Everyone puts him on a J so is Moocher trying to scare him off from an otherwise split pot or does he hold the nuts.
Once again Deadly is in a tough spot.
he calls and Moocher flips Aj and its buy in time again for deadly once again.

More to follow.....

Good News - bad news

Bad news first I think. My Netvigator account isn't working. After the engineer failing to turn up twice and the helpline ringing out for 20 minutes last night I'm a tad frustrated with PCCFW. No prizes for guessing what adjective the F represents. The good news is that my computer is knackered as well so even if I could get online I couldnt play. Actually that's more bad news. A trip to Wanchai computer centre required.

So what is the good news. Well apart from having a live game to look forward to on Saturday I received a reply from my support chums at Paradise. While still not resolving my question about transferring my account to US$ or missing decimal points from my bets they did give me US$50 to 'give me a chance to try the software'. It was written by someone with a little common-sense as well and I may even end up finishing my first deposit bonus now. We will see.

The Live game seems to be set for Saturday night and I have the afternoon babysitting and watching Sleeping Beauty at Grappas to look forward to. Will they have real dwarves? That is the question at the forefront of my thoughts.

And what I have more live poker news? Really? Yes indeed - a flyer turned up in the office for a Texas Holdem night every Thursday at Drop. Happy hour drinks and free prizes for winners. Sponsored by Pravda vodka. Sounds like it might be worth a visit. Chaps what say you?

Hope to get online soon but in the meantime hope someone else has some news to report. Hopefully of the good variety.

Absolutely super

Moocher shifts his funds to Absolute who offer a 100% bonus on his remaining US$400. I quoted his hand from yesterday of A7 taking down KK after an all-in pre-flop. I forgot to give the details.

Board was: K44. Nice flop yeah. Turn is a 4. River is a 4.

Lol.

No play for me last night. I need to rake another 45 hands to clear the US$40 Golden Riviera Bonus. Hope I can manage that tonight although my computer may not let me.

Phillberto v Bad Maniac and Phillberto v Good maniac

I notice some scary looking average pot size stats on a table so decide to take a look. One seat there so I grab it as I notice Mr Allin with anything is causing some havoc at the table.

Sitting with US$105 his tactics are simple. "mallin" - every hand without fail. I fold twice during which time he gets a caller with AK who hits and beats his J6o. This is clearly a small window of opportunity. I'm now rooting for the crazy man and hoping he will add to his stack! Done to US$55 he doesn't disappoint and obliges with his trade-mark play. I'm on the button with AQo. I pause for a second. considering how risky a play this is with two to act behind me. I think I have to make the call but pray noone calls behind me. I get a call by a mid stack (US$27). Its prima so only winning hands aren't shown.

I think I've taken it when I see a pile of chips heading towards my stack but then realise I've taken only the side pot. Flop was KQ4 so I had to think I was good bar pocket AA, KK, QQ or AK. All quite plausible hands given his play. He show just KJ though but its still good enough. Ah well US$3 lost only although like a shooting star the maniac implodes and disappears into the internet cosmos. I take a chunk from a calling station and its all good after all.
I wish I'd been there to see what caused the chain reaction that led to such craziness though.

On to another table and this time its almost as juicy.

Mr Maniac is putting in some pretty big bets on the flop and turn and is taking it down a lot. He is building a decent stack. Up US$120 and I think he is using a thought out strategy (along the lines of the won deadly attempted previously before abandoning. I get AA very early on. I make a standard raise of US$2 and get raised to US$7. That is perfect for me and I re-pop him for US$21. I expect to take it down but he calls. I've only got US$27 behind in a US$46 pot. I briefly consider playing possum and trying to make a weak bet but decide that could be read a strong. I push and he folds.

I don't think he will allow me to play a big pair that way again. I bide my time and decide to raise with an unreadable hand Q6o, raising to US$2 and he folds.

I raise AK again and miss on the flop. I decide to check it and he checks behind, wary that I may be setting a trap. When I check it down to the river without hitting he bets pot. I fold.

I get KK after just another round. I raise to US$2. He flat calls. I make a mental note to not get too attached to just a pair. I want to keep a small pot here unless I spike trips. Flop comes Jd 9s 5d. I c-bet and he raises to US$16. I've still got US$78 behind me and will have to play it out of position. I think through my options. A push will only be called if I'm beat. He could have anything here. Flush draw, two pair, trips. I just can't come up with a play I like. If I play it I'm pretty sure he will put me on an overpair if I play back. I click the extra time button and then fold.
He claims he had 9 5. One guy says good fold. 2 of them say they wouldn't have folded.

I have AKo and raise to US$2 shortly after. He calls. Flop is three diamonds j 10 6. I have the A diamonds. I bet US$3.50 and he calls. Gut shot and nut flush draw I bet 3/4 pot. I think he takes this as weakness although I'd play a baby flush the same. He pushes allin. I fold. He claims he had the flush. Not sure if I believe him or not now.

Not confident enough in my defence against this play to continue and I take my smallish profit and leave. I'm going to come up with a strategy for this player and stick to it. I felt I played a bit scared. He seems to be the guy that decides when the chips go in and he uses that to his advantage. I use the same strategy against short stacks who are prone to going all-in or folding. Bet enough to fold them or let them push and then pick them off with hands that you beat and fold others.

Rolling with it

Bank-rolls as of this morning.....

1) Deadly $1597 (+118)(-59)(+447) (-36) (+35) (+101) (-110) (+257) (+134) (+6) (+117)
2) Phillberto $1227 (+243) (+41) (+12) (+231)(+76)(+90) (+50) (+106) (+23) (+133) (+306)
3) Moocher666 $445 (-35) (-38) (-27) (-105) (no change)(+78) (+4) *
4) Bigshotbog $224 (-6) (no change)(-40) (no change)(nc) (nc) (-150)(nc) (+10) (-264)*

Moocher owes Phillberto$475

Deadly steps up to 100NL on Friday and swings in both directions before banking a decent win. He seems to be providing positive reports whenever he manages online but eventually has an off-day at 50NL on Sunday morning and drops a buy-in or two before recovering some back. Still posts a three figure winning week. I'll predict he will hit 2k before August rears its head.

I manage a session on Friday that I'll post in more detail on when my computer is rejuvenated. Another short winning session on Saturday (which I'll post now from memory) before logging off for Chilli and red wine. After winning and 'wining' I decide to see if the two go together. I sensibly opt for the six man $2+0.50 six handed SnG.

First one I finish third when as the blinds are climbing I put a min-raiser all-in from the Big Blind. He calls with a lowly Q5o to my A10s but spikes a queen. Next two games I win and take home a mighty US$4 x2.

I emailed to claim my US$40 bonus from Riviera but they gave me a $10 bonus instead and I need to play just a few more hands to earn another US$40. Fine with me.

Moocher downward slide continues. Allin with KK is called by A7 which triumphs. This is despite him earning the US$100 empire bonus so he assesses his options. And of course bank-rolling talks to follow.

Bigshot takes a tentative shot return to US$6 SnG but fails to place. He seems to perk up at the prospect of the next life game on Saturday night.

Elsewhere

No action in Phillbertoville last night but Deadly chalks up a quick $16 win in precisely 24mins. Moocher grinds out 3 table hours (two tabling) probably reaching the half way point for his $100 bonus but losing $3.75 in the process. Despite winning a tourney his bankroll hovers around $370 meaning the bonus is required to ensure he can make some inroads in his current US$185 deficit.
Forgotten Bigshot mentions dipping his toe back into the poker waters but no update as yet.

Golden Riviera

Ok a little batch of hand histories today. Hands are in order and I've thrown in reads as I had them. I've changed the stacks to US$50 on each occasion to avoid clues but do them one at a time anyway. Below are the six biggest hands of the night - winners and losers.

Phillberto ????

3 street bluff.

Signed up for Golden Riviera last night. Decided to play a couple of rounds of 10NL to try out the software and make sure Poker Tracker was getting the hand histories okay.

I do a background check on all the players with Poker-Edge and find that I have a couple of solid players at the table. As I'm not planning on staying for long I stick around.

I'd also just been reading Sklansky's chapter in sizing bluffs so maybe that explains this hand. Normally I'd never do this on a 10NL table but I did have my 'read'.

I fold for two rounds so I think I'll get respect from blinds who are both solid. I raise on the button with 108o. I get called by the big blind.

Flop: Kh Jh 6d
Pot: 0.85
He checks
I follow up with a c-bet 0.65c
He calls.
I'm now pretty sure he has something.
Turn: Ac
Pot:2.15
He checks.
I decide to fire another bullet representing a hand. A queen would make the straight for me but I think he will fold without having at least two pairs here.
I bet: 1.75
He calls
Oh, oh. Got myself into a big pot with nothing here. Oops.
River: 9h
Pot: 5.65
Unless that got there for him. That has to be a scary river for him.
He checks.
I just can't see him checking if he has just made a flush or a straight.
I think a bluff is +ev here.
I bet out for 3.75.
Thoughts?

Another day another dollar

My biggest miscalculation yesterday was how long it would take me to clear a mere 42 raked hands to earn my US$100 Wild Jack Bonus. I initially thought one hour only. Then I thought, great I'll two table and be done in half and hour and keep Mrs P. happy. Two and half hours later as I finish my last hand I've earned $1 I've got myself in the bad books big style.

Very frustrating grinding. As I speak to Moocher on the phone I have a run of about 8 big pocket pairs in the space of 5-10 mins. None of them get paid off beyond my pre-flop raise until QQ earns a $15 pot payoff against two short stacks allins.

My 25NL win-rate shrinks to 8PTBB/100 although combined with the 30 of last night 50NL hands it works out a more healthy 10.71PTBB/100 - above my target.

-I also played for 20 mins after work while waiting for Mrs P to get back from Disneyland with the little chap. Recover US$13 playing 10NL there making some amends for my disastrous spell there last week.
Elsewhere...
- Paradise ignore my last email. They asked me for a new username to set-up an account in US$. I suggested 'dormant' as my user-name, giving them a small clue as to how often I'll be playing there.
- I email Wild Jack to claim my bonus.
- My books arrive from Internettexasholdem.com. I kick off with Sklansky/Miller's No Limit Hold'em - Theory and Practice.

Moocher asks 'Does it just say the same as all the other books?'.

Yes indeed just another one of these boring poker gurus trying to instil winning habits. Nothing you need concern yourself with Moocher.

Moocher takes the plunge into 10NL managing 2 hours and winning 0.13c. Not assuaged by the fact that it also translates into $20 bonus money he opts to return to his favoured speed tourneys.
Moocher reports another dry run on the $6 levels so he steps up to be able to avoid the so called chancers that are calling him down and then delights in winning a decent prize. He drops down again after this success and his dry run continues for the next two games. With his balance now at US$400 he is running at -$155. He emails Empire for details on his current bonus status.

I guess I've added US$144 to my roll but it doesn't feel like I am up. With an unhappy wife considering heading off to the races tonight I'm debating whether I should have a night off or not before launching into Mission 'Golden Riviera'.

Any action deadly?

Bonus Whoring

Ok with the Wild Jack bonus finishing in line I've been doing some research on the next one.

Decided on Golden Riviera. I've registered previously without noticing that you needed to play 50NL to clear the bonus. Its only $40 but clears at $5.76 an hour playing short handed. Seven hours of play. I'll only play one table and don't really expect to be earning a positive PTBB but who knows. If I can get take more out of the site than I put in I'll be happy. Its another prima skin so it should be the same pool of players I'm up against.

Fancy it deadly?

Newsflash from Moocher. He has to switch to cash games if he wants to clear his Empire bonus so looks like he could have 10 hours of grinding ahead of him to to get US$100. With two weeks to go, a family and career to take care of can he find enough time to manage ten hours at the poker table? .........................

or will he have to finish it off tomorrow. :-)

50NL

My biggest buy-in so far and I remind myself to play aggressive and not play scared.

Oh well. Maybe he would have folded. Maybe not. I buy back in to max and carry on.

A big hand comes up that I'm not involved. A reraised pot with three people in it.
It flops 6clubs 6diamonds 7clubs
Pot is about US$20.
It gets checked around. Very peculiar. Surely in a three way raised pot someone has an overpair! With a flush draw there you have to bet surely.
Turn:10hearts
Patrik Polly who bets US$11.
Cubano_002 calls.

Turn: 2c
Pot: $42

PatrikPolly bets again and is put allin.
He calls and shows Aclubs Kclubs nut flush to lose to quad sixes.
The slow playing starts to make a bit of sense.
Patrikpolly is not a happy bunny but buys back in for US$34.50 (strange).

Wow I'm hitting some cards. I recognise some pretty loose play is being rewarded though and thank the poker gods.

Patrikpolly fumes after another tough loss. I decide to take my money and run (and sleep).

My 50NL record. Played 30 hands and won around the same I have playing 2,500 25NL hands at Wild Jack. Lol.

I think the only lesson I'm taking away here is that I got very lucky and hit some rivers!

Time to step back down to 25NL. Work on my discipline. Finish the last 42 raked hands to clear my $100 bonus.

All the ingredients there for a blow up and I end up adding $46 to the roll. Phew a lucky escape.

Patience and Discipline

Both were in very short supply last night. With Mrs Phillberto off to Disneyland overnight I had the evening free. So with a sandwich and cup of tea I plunge into a night of poker. 20 minutes in and I'm feeling on top of the world. I've selected a table full of fish and I'm up $30. I spark open another table and it starts to all go pear shaped. I make a few semi-bluffs that are called down and miss and my winnings are depleted to just $8 shortly after. The guy that took my money gets busted and the table starts to fill with regulars. After plunging $6 into negative I up and leave for easier pickings.

The next table I take a couple of bad beats and start to tilt. I make a few dodgy calls and my losses are starting to mount. Then I pick up pocket Kings I. I raise and get called by a loose aggro and a calling station. Flop: 8 8 9. I bet and get called by aggro and min-raised by the calling station. My bat senses go off here as it does for the aggro who folds. I call the min-raise though and decide to check the turn. He checks behind. Mmm maybe he doesn't have it. Maybe he has the 9 or a higher pair. I lead for 2.75. He puts me all in for another $6. I'm pretty sure he has the 8 here but the pot odds look tempting and I have Kings man!
I call and muck as he shows the 8. What a donkey.
I give up on that table and persevere on my winning table for another 10mins but make no progress.

After a lengthy two table session and I'm down around $32 with my PTBB/100 dipping to under 9.

It's late. I'm tired and not playing well. What would any rational, disciplined poker player do in those circumstances.

a) Take a quick break and review the key hands using poker tracker before continuing.
b) Call it a night and go to bed to return the next day refreshed and invigorated.
c) Decide its about time I gave 50NL a try.

Answers on a post-code please.

Looking forward to the next post?

Sermon on the Mount

From Deadly...Jesus speaks...

http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/tip-email-104-deposit.php?utm_id=98

Reading in between the lines he is telling me to do it! Or maybe that was God himself whispering in my ear.

By the way the 200NL players disdainfully talk about the 'micros' I may have a way to go.

I do think the key factor in my 'plan' is that I'd be trying to finance an extended holiday in a country that you can live the good life for buttons.

So dissecting his points:
Are you making more money than you are at your current working environment?
Hell no. Unlikely to be too. Hence the holiday angle.

Constistant winning player over 6 months?
Yes. Small potatoes but yes.

It will become a grind.
Yup probably will. First 3 months though will be exciting and a challenge. Thereafter who knows. If I don't like it then the holiday ends.

You want to be playing when other players are off their game.
With internet play this is less relevant and its easier to catch tired Americans and drunken Europeans playing at a reasonable hour in Asia.

Might not play enough.
I reckon I'll make a big effort to be pretty disciplined. Then again if it becomes a grind I don't have too.

You should have long, profitable periods that serve as evidence of your abilities.
Mmmm. Not quite there yet.

You should have put in enough hours to know that you can really enjoy the game, even when it becomes the center of your professional life.
I can see it being a drag when you are playing a lot and losing!

You should know that you can endure some long, tough, unlucky stretches.
Hope I don't see any of these too early.

If you're really sure you’ve got what it takes and poker does become your career, I look forward to meeting you at the table.
Errm table selection, dude. I don't think so.

Motivation and Goals

Given Bigshot's flurry of activity at the table of late I really should get him to kick this off. From Deadly's post a few days ago he took a stab at getting to grips with what his motivation is.

I agree the actual money isn't the primary motivator although I think the potential money that can be won is a factor if you are shit hot. I seem to run somewhere between hot and shit with the end result being somewhat mediocre.

Losing sucks big time. No-one likes to lose of course but the classic reaction to losing is tilting. As people's bankrolls dwindle down they wanna gamble more. I think deadly mentioned one guy buying in for a funny amount at his table and I had the same last week. Someone buying in for US$7.74. It actually makes me laugh because you know its the last of their bankroll and they are there to be busted.

Winning is fun and money is how the 'score' is kept so I try to focus my energies on winning money. I think that explains why I'm playing at lower levels than I could at least be trying out.

I think only about 10% of players are long term winners. To do that you either have to be very good or a bit boring though and be willing to grind below your level.

In terms of other family pressures on your time I believe we are all in the same boat. There are worse things that you could be doing though. At least you are home and its the cheapest hobby I've found so far.

You mentioned the slow progress in reaching the next G deadly. I've got a spreadsheet predicting where I think I'll be over the next few months. I'm currently $49 behind where I expected to be at this point and predicting I will hit 2G in or around the 11th July!

I think that will be my trigger point for 50NL although I also mentioned 10,000K hands at +10PTBB/100 as another possibility.

Table Selection

I've been putting some work into table selection in the past few sessions. I now have my laptop next to me as I play on the PC with the laptop on the poker-edge website and run through the ids of all the players I am up against while I am waiting for the first big blind.

If find more than one good player I leave unless there are a couple of fish to make it worth sticking around. I can also occasionally get an option to choose the best seat to maximise my chance of busting the fish although usually its just one seat left.

On prima (Wild Jack) there are a reasonable number of regulars in a fairly small pool of players at the 20NL stakes. Not all the regulars are good though. Some are rocks, some are loose aggressive aggressive. With no pre-knowledge I could lose a bunch to either of these. Knowing what you are up against you can take advantage from the first hand.

The problem is Poker-Edge only has data on 1/3rd of players. It may also be a small sample as on a few occasions its been wrong. Maybe somebody has read a book or two and learned to play in the meantime but I still like to take it a bit easy for the first few rotations until the table stats indicate the poker-edge read is likely to be right.

I've also started taking notes on players for the first time and colour coding each player. Green for fish, yellow for rocks, maniacs, mediocre players and orange for solid players. I still have red available for use. Applications welcome!

Next step would be to go through played hands of regulars looking for tells in their betting patterns from Poker Tracker database but the samples are pretty small to try this at the moment.

While you are waiting

Did I miss the bankroll check last week?
Putting the new one together now and seem to remember typing it last week but can't find it. Mmmm.

I have guests so I couldn't get in to the computer room to copy the hand histories so memory will have to serve.

Three big hands that I remember from last night.

1st hand early on the table so no real read.

Pocket KK for me. I raise and face a reraise to $2.20. I re-reraise to $5.50 and he puts me allin.

The 'tight' angel on one shoulder is saying. - the third reraise is always Aces.
The looser 'devil' on the other shoulder is saying - never fold Kings preflop tightass, ever!

Its shorthanded, 20NL. I can afford to ride with the devil on this one, yes?

Qspades 10spades in the small blind. Two limpers so I tag along.

Flop: Kclubs Jspades 6spades.
Pot: $0.80
Open ended straight draw and flush draw for me.
I bet 0.65 and get raised to min raised 1.30 which still sees two more callers.
I consider reraising here as I suspect I'll be favourite against most hands and would if I knew the players to be decent but with so many callers I'm worried a lot of my outs could be in other peoples hands already.
I opt to just call and wait for one of my outs to hit.

Turn: 4 diamonds.

A blank. I check and its checked around:
US$6 pot.

The river lands and its a juicy one.
River: Kspades.

I hold the second nut flush on a paired board. Two of the remaining stacks have around $6 and one has a full stack. I check and wait to see the action.

First short-stack goes all. The big stack folds. The other short stack goes allin.

What am I facing?

With that flop I'm really only scared of AA. I don't try slow-playing and just get it all in on the flop. When they both call I'm terrified. Suspecting I'm up against AA. When they turn over their donk cards I take down my biggest pot so far. That's much more like it.

End the table US$48 up. Back to over 15PTBB/100 and with half my bonus requirements met.

My reraise should have taken out anything but high pairs and AK, maybe AQs. I really think he is on something like KK or QQ or AK or AQ here. I check the turn to give him a bit more confidence to call a river bet. I really can't see how the turn or river have helped him. When I'm reraised on the river I struggle to come up with what he might have. AA,99, JJ seem the most plausible holdings. Could I find a laydown here? With so much invested I have to call I think. Another US$17.50 down and I'm on a bit of a bad run.

My Wild Jack profits are down to next to nothing and my win rate dips too 1PTBB/100.

Aces getting cracked.

Thursday 31st May (cont)
I get home at a reasonable time having only quaffed a few red wines at the closing party of the event my company were running. Spark up Wild Jack and try to make amends for earlier.

First big mistake was not re-raising when I got the chance pre-flop. I would either have taken the pot down or been playing a pot big enough to get it all in on almost any flop. After missing my chance I'm out of position I really wanted to keep the pot size under control. With a raiser and two callers it is already pretty big. I hate his check on the turn having hit a hand. A bet there would have got me in big trouble.
On the river reraise it should have been as easy laydown by me. Because I'd under-represented my hand the whole way though I couldn't find a fold and paid to see he had hit his straight on the turn. Bah, another US$8.50 lost and I call it a night.

Overtired

Thursday 31st May
So Thursday saw me sneaking in a quick session during lunch. Not having my usual poker fix meant I tried playing too many tables. I was shattered from a hard week so it maybe wasn't a good idea. Especially I was playing 5 tables and having to post extra big blinds as I timed out several times. No hands as I had no tracking software running. Called it a day but not before I dwindles away my party stack by US$38.
