Motivation and Goals

Given Bigshot's flurry of activity at the table of late I really should get him to kick this off. From Deadly's post a few days ago he took a stab at getting to grips with what his motivation is.

I agree the actual money isn't the primary motivator although I think the potential money that can be won is a factor if you are shit hot. I seem to run somewhere between hot and shit with the end result being somewhat mediocre.

Losing sucks big time. No-one likes to lose of course but the classic reaction to losing is tilting. As people's bankrolls dwindle down they wanna gamble more. I think deadly mentioned one guy buying in for a funny amount at his table and I had the same last week. Someone buying in for US$7.74. It actually makes me laugh because you know its the last of their bankroll and they are there to be busted.

Winning is fun and money is how the 'score' is kept so I try to focus my energies on winning money. I think that explains why I'm playing at lower levels than I could at least be trying out.

I think only about 10% of players are long term winners. To do that you either have to be very good or a bit boring though and be willing to grind below your level.

In terms of other family pressures on your time I believe we are all in the same boat. There are worse things that you could be doing though. At least you are home and its the cheapest hobby I've found so far.

You mentioned the slow progress in reaching the next G deadly. I've got a spreadsheet predicting where I think I'll be over the next few months. I'm currently $49 behind where I expected to be at this point and predicting I will hit 2G in or around the 11th July!

I think that will be my trigger point for 50NL although I also mentioned 10,000K hands at +10PTBB/100 as another possibility.
